Hello my family and I are thinking about moving to the Spokane Valley/Post Falls area and would like some input regarding diversity in this area. We are from Hawaii and we have a mix of ethnicity. I am half Filipino and half Chinese. My husband is Caucasian, Hawaiian, Filipino, and Chinese. Do you think we'll experience any diversity issues in the Spokane/Post Falls area? Being from Hawaii our kids were never really exposed to diversity issues as Hawaii is a melting pot of diversity so I really would not want them to feel any different up there, and neither would we.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I am half white/half Latino and had no issues.

I say don't make it an issue and there will be no issue.

Our neighbors are from Hawaii. Great family with very cool names for their children. I've never heard either the Mom or Dad have any problems at schools. The kids are very involved in sports and do very well in that arena as well.

I don't think you'll have any problems.

Spokane is not diverse. That being said, I never noticed significant racism. The biggest problem will be finding decent filipino restaurants. Or any.

The only Filipino joints I know of are Kusina Filipina (sp?), I've never eaten there but heard its good although that was before I moved over to Baltimore (2010) so I'm not even sure they're around anymore. On the northside where I live there's one called Lalangs Kitchen, which I have eaten at and it is really good. I think Filipino food is vastly underrated. Lots of Thai food joints here, but way too few Filipino places.

Spokane is more diverse than you see on the surface. We have lots of liberals here and lots of conservatives. There are extremes on both sides, we have a well attended Pride parade, lots of outdoor enthusiast (and those cross political lines). But, if by diverse you mean too many white people, well then yes you're right.

There might not be enough variety of eateries of different ethnicities to trick you into thinking it's diverse though.

An interesting observation. Thanks for being honest enough to phrase it that way.

I'm curious, though: how many white people are too many, would you say? How many are too few? How many would be just right?

As a white person myself, I am always interested to know just how much my presence constitutes a threat to "diversity" (I'm also interested in what the term "diversity" itself means...but that's another issue)...

How many white people are too many? - Enough to make minorities uncomfortable. Could be as little 1 all the way to up 1 million.

How many are too few? I'm not sure...lots of places have no white people and they do absolutely great. We didn't invade/conquer/destroy the entire planet did we?

How many would be just right? - Well too many and the world goes to ****, too few and then who can we blame things on? I'd say somewhere around 37.5% would be tolerable.
