Anyway, I do love Spokane. I love how it is different than the rest of the country. I love how the people would rather spend money at a mom & pop store than a national chain. I love how it is family oriented and the people are generally nice. Yes there are always people that are not-so-nice, however, in the grand scheme of things I would rather be in Spokane than a lot of other places...Although I do agree that snow in June is a little ridiculous!
No worries ILove. Welcome to the forum.

That was why I didn't respond to it. I'd love to live in Spokane... my son and most of my family live there. We are living Sequim right now and had planned to sell our house and move to Spokane. But after having our house on the market for 10 months, we gave up. So now we are working on a five year plan and hope the housing market gets better by then. In the meantime, we will just visit once or twice a year.

I think using the word love, at any point in time I've lived here, would be a laugh. I don't find it friendly, people seem unsophisticated and scared to death of the modern world outside. It's dirty and ugly in my opinion, too. One need only drive down Trent or East Sprague to see it. The bad roads alone tell the tale of neglect, corrupted, misdirected funding, and general tackiness the powers that be couldn't care less about improving. And take Hillyard, I once overheard some toothless person say a Mrkt St antique store, Yeah, ya don't really get to be Hillyard til ya lived here twenty years.... Oh, right, like I or any sane person would aspire to that!

I've lived in Spokane my entire life, 50 years, and anything negative you say Spokane may be, it would be more so elsewhere in other cities. Pollution: more so elsewhere; mean people: more so elsewhere; high cost of living: more so elsewhere; natural disasters: more so elsewhere; traffic congestion: more so elsewhere; population density: more so elsewhere. Irregardless of what anyone says here, the Spokane, WA/Coeur d'Alene, ID area is experiencing a huge number of people relocating here from other larger cities. Unlike Arizona, Nevada or Southern California, we possess the resources to support this growth, water, hydroelectric power, etc., and these resources are not strained to their limits.

I believe anything negative that has ocurred here recently can be directly related to the fact that we have so many people coming here now, bringing with them their less-than-desirable driving habits from the big cities, gangs, aggressive angry attitudes. None of these things existed here years ago, the locals were friendly, crime and gangs were something that happened somewhere else, doors could be left unlocked, etc. I really can't stress enough that if one is looking for the city-type life (restaurants, theaters, etc) Spokane would be at the bottom of the list. If you are into outdoor activities (skiing, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, etc) this is the area to live in. My Gal and I can head out on our motorcycle in any direction and in a matter of ten minutes or so be completely away from civilization. East into ID/MT, north to Canada, south into the Palouse country and Oregon, west into the scablands of central WA, and all you will encounter is small towns with friendly people.

I can't believe the reference here to Hillyard, a low income area in north Spokane. Other larger cities have dozens of "Hillyards". lol My girlfriend has told me of huge tracts between Long Beach, CA and Los Angeles that she would be afraid to walk through even in the middle of the day. Hillyard is DEFINITELY not like this.

Check the calendar lately? How much worse can it get than to be nine days from summer with snow in the air?

It says a lot about Spokane when the best its defenders can say is "Well, at least we're not having floods and tornados right now!"

Besides, the flooding was last week, remember?
If you don't like it, then MOVE....get over it...life is too short...

Hey Trailbuster... it's posts like yours that make my DH and I sooo excited to get up there... I promise we aren't bringing what we are leaving with us!! We are trying to get away from it... had to laugh at your 'aggressive angry attitude' about driving statement.. we are sooo sick of it... we notice such a HUGE difference between here and up there... we travel down the freeway... even in rush hour up there and just shake our heads in amazement in the difference of the driving experience... we've been downtown.. and all over Division and Francis.. NOTHING like what we deal with on a day to day basis here... We lived in Portland in 1981...so we went back thru there on one of our many trips home... the driving was about as crazy as here in central CA.... we've never really had anyone be mean when we mention that we are gonna be CA transplants... they joke around about it but so far so good... I do think we will stop by DMV and get our plates changed QUICK though... LOL :P

So I will take that as a "no" vote.

I've lived in many city areas and country areas not only in the US but in other countries too and the bottom line is you have good and bad in all areas. You get out of a place what you put into it. There are good and bad, nice and not so nice people everywhere you go. I've found if I'm nice and friendly then people are nice and friendly towards me. If I come across people I don't like or places I don't like I won't go there again and I will avoid such people. You have to ask yourself if you want nightlife or day life. Obviously as Trailbuster pointed out if you like sports like hiking, kayaking, boating skiing, fishing, waterfalls, scenery, lakes, rivers, mountains, wildlife then all that is here. If you want shopping malls then Spokane has those too. Not on the level of larger cities but they come with traffic jams and parking problems not to mention crowds. To those who are thinking of moving Spokane way ask yourselves what you want to enjoy in a new place and choose accordingly. I enjoy visiting cities but prefer to live in the country. Good luck.
