Default South Hill vs Garland/Shadle..Moving soon Please help

Hi, my family and I are moving to Spokane from Olympia. I have heard differnet things from people concerning where to move. I would love to hear anyones input.

We have found a good home up around 29th and Ray intersection on South Hill. Now I have heard..
1. Good neighborhood, however the parks at night have kids that think they are in gangs and hang out around them. So it is not good to go out and walk at night in that area.
2. That's where all the young "yuppie tree huggers live".

We have also looked around Shadle and Garland. I have heard some things about there also.

1. More hippie types live there. Still tree huggers but prefer birkenstocks instead of dockers.
2. Northside is just better than South Hill..(is there a fued with the north and south?)

Would love to hear anything that any one has to tell me.

P.S Spokane doesn't seem to culturally diverse..Where are all the hispanic people, or are there any?

Check out www.Ahana.org for info on a Spokane organization that is geared towards building cutural awareness in the community through local businesses. There is a decent sized hispanic population in Spokane and they're not concentrated in one particular area. You might want to visit DeLeon's Mexican food market (Mexican food, grocery, bakery, & tortilla factory. Spokane, WA) and get to know the folks there. It's located on the north side but I also heard they were opening a restaurant/deli downtown.

As far as the north/south feud -- it's kind of funny how people here refer to themselves as either north, south or valley people. Not really a feud - just a geographical reference to the place they think of as their "home". There are many differences in neighborhoods within all the larger sections of north, south & valley -- you'll just have to drive around and see what you think of each area.

Spokane tends to be generally divided (when people are describing parts of town) into the south hill, the north side, and the valley. Of course, these are very general descriptions as each has a wide range of neighborhoods. What type of neighborhood do you prefer? What is important to you?

I could give you my general thoughts on the places mentioned in your post but if you let people know what is important to you people here would have a better idea of what areas might be a good match.

As mentioned above, because the three general areas cover so much ground I would take any 'north is better than south' or vice versa with a grain of salt.
