I really never thought crime was THAT bad in Spokane and after visiting some cities down south (Atlanta, New Orleans, Birmingham) Spokane is definitely safer. I noted in recent years there seems to have been somewhat of an uptick in crime, but I have not been living there for a few years either.

In response to the homeless population, it does seem there are more beggars each time I visit, which is unfortunate, but they seem as harmless as they always have.

I used to go downtown at night all the time and I never feared for my life. It was more of a welcoming atmosphere and people just wanting to enjoy the night. The bums mostly left you alone and if you didn't have money or booze they would just ask the next person walking by.

Here's somebody who will probably never contribute to the Spokane crime stats ever again! Remember the South Hill rapist Kevin (Fred) Coe? He served his time, 25 years, and has been at McNeil Island ever since. And that's where he is going to stay:

Remember his crazy mom? No wonder Coe is a lifelong nutcase....

Admittedly, I'm from, and have mostly lived in small towns all my life, so I am probably not very good at distinquishing a "real" bum from a fake panhandler (i.e. the kind that has his Escalade parked around the corner from his begging spot), but after living along the I-5 corridor for five years in the early 2000's, I saw WAY more bums along I-5 than I had ever seen in Spokane.

I guess I'm just wondering why this comment comes up a lot in the Spokane forums when, to me, many other places seem as bad or worse...

The city council just passed a new ordinance, the vagrantsbumswinostweakershomeless cannot step off the curb when trolling for money....I think this just applies to Downtown. Will this make ANY difference in the vagrantbumwinostweakerhomeless population in Spokane......haha, doubt it.

Hi. I've lived in Spokane since a child. Lemme see what I can do to help. There is a reason why Spokane has high crime rate and it's actually because we don't have burbs. If you for example compare us to a larger city like Portland Or or Seattle Wa they are surrounded by "towns" who have their own stats on crime even though living in Auburn is pretty much the same as living in Seattle and living in Gresham is about the same as living in Portland. Spokane has "neighborhoods" and they are sometimes called areas. It is very rare to hear of a death on the news I'd say maybe once a week and a lot of them are nature related (canoe accidents, skiing accidents, etc.) I had never been scared of anyone until I lived in Portland and Seattle. Scene's like seeing kids get beat up for their coat or shoes and people getting beat up with a baseball bat are things I've only seen in Portland & Seattle. I don't think I've ever seen a violent crime in my life though I (who also lived on the East Side) did see a lot of drug dealing but I attribute that to the area I lived. Any place else I've never seen drug dealing.

Neighborhood Service Department

Basically, if you avoid the purple area (to live, but don't be afraid of it the same way you would say south portland) and west central area (by the court house) you'll get a decent school for your kids and as long as you remember to lock up your house and car you're good to go. Almost all of those neighborhoods have a watch program which really is effective in terms of crime. It's really a worthwhile program my mom led ours for years.

The biggest issues in our police they are not good at responding to crimes like bike, car stealing etc......

Holistically, and no reason to lie.. I tell my kids I'd walk any neighborhood at 3 am without a single worry. (and have)

Lastly, I also think the crime rate was hiked pretty good because: serial killer. :/ Robert Lee Yates, Jr. killed something like over 13 prostitutes which I'm sure that didn't help on the rates.

Anyway.... just my thoughts. Hope they help.
