This winter has been extreme in regards to snowfall. Studded tires will only work if you are in town with continuous plowing. Plowing is costly. I would say that a 4x4 is essential. Having your own tractor on site would be ideal. Last month we needed to be plowed out twice by the man with the heavy-duty tractor @ $50 bucks an hour. $300 worth of snow plowing to keep the driveway clear and the mailbox on the road accessible for the post person.

If you live in Spokane proper, a 4x4 is hardly essential. Front wheel drive and decent driving skills will be fine. Outside of town may be another story.

I lived in Portland until last September, and this winter in Spokane has been as cloudy and foggy as any winter in Portland. The summers may be sunny, and this winter may be unusual, but I have seen the sun about 1.5 days per week since the beginning of December. If you have seen it more you must be in the mountains above 4000 feet - above the week-long inversions.
