You obviously know little or nothing about the sport. I've played hockey for the past 60 years and I admire the skill level that these players have ascended to. The deft stickhandling, passing, and skating are a beautiful thing. I don't like the fighting but I accept it as a necessary evil (although I do believe it could be banished without long-term consequences). Try watching the game in person or on a large HD TV and just look at the way the players can maneuver a puck at the end of a long curved piece of wood without ever looking down. And can put a pass directly on the tape of a player 60 feet away travelling 25 miles an hour. Or how a player can use his feet to kick an errant puck from between his legs right onto his stick. Try to appreciate the beauty and you may end up liking the game.

60 years huh? Impressive. I hope I have at least another 40 in me

Not too many 65-year old goalies still suiting up. I try to remain upright because if I go down to make a save, I may not ever get up unless there is a whistle and someone helps me.
Surprised no one in this thread mentioned the obvious old Rodney Dangerfield joke that exemplifies the long history of fighting in hockey:
"I went to a fight last night and a hockey game broke out".
It's ingrained in the sport. While it may be diminished through harsher rules I think the fact it is a 'contact' sport and is also the fastest moving contact sport makes officiating it / intervening / outlawing fights still very difficult.
Basketball as others have mentioned is by 'rules' supposed to be a non contact sport. Fights in basketball rarely result in two people squaring off rather its mostly theater, posturing, and lame attempts a la Melo as previous poster commented.
Most every sport has its so called unwritten rules about conduct between opposing players on the field / court of play. Some are ridiculous like Baseball but that's a whole other topic.
Cause I dont understand why Basketball was compared to Hockey?
What is with our obession of comparing Basketball to Hockey and vice-versa? I really do not get it... the sports are nothing alike.
And the crux of the matter is ALL other sports besides "fighting" sports DO NOT allow fighting. It's even banned in NASCAR... So Hockey is just all by itself.
There is no need to compare it to "just" basketball.
Tougher game, tougher athletes and no Prima Donnas.
