Most popular american sports franchise?
I thought perhaps it might be the Yankees, but it has to be the Lakers.
Just based on facebook alone, the Lakers are far ahead of any other US franchise, it's not close. I see facebook as a great gauge because of the number of people that are on there.
The only franchises ahead of the Lakers are Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Manchester United. Not bad company to be in.

I don't think Facebook is that great of gauge, mainly because its younger people (especially teens) who are most likely to "like" pages on Facebook.
I'd say the Yankees are probably more popular among people with adults, and the Lakers are more popular among kids and teens as basketball is a much more popular sport among the younger crowd. The Yankees are by a huge margin the most well-known American sports franchise abroad, mainly do their significance in media throughout history. You can find locals in just about any city in the world wearing Yankees caps.

I would say Yankees followed very closely by the Lakers, both nationally and internationally, cowboys are mostly known inside the U.S. mostly

I still think the Lakers have the greatest influence worldwide. Facebook is a great gauge. There are people of all ages on there. How is the discepency so lopsided? The Lakers have 14.3 million followers on there and the Yankees are at around 5.9 million. It's not even close.
You would also never see a Yankee get the same kind of ovation that Kobe received during the Beijing games. The Chinese were going crazy for him.
Basketball is more popular than baseball worldwide.
