I support my own country, but I applaud when small nations win medals. For some countries, their athlete winning gold, silver, or bronze makes them a celebrity for their country. They swell with national pride at having won a medal. I say good for them.

I do. When NBC goes overboard with the back stories of the USA olympians I tend to pull for the other guys. Like in Bejing it was the Michael Phelps show all day everyday so I was hoping anyone would beat him just to add some excitement to the games.

Oh that is what I so despise about the Olympics. Some American places 27th in some obscure sport and we get a half-profile while some woman from Fiji is taking first (of course I am exaggerating but not by much). So to answer the question, when we get a chance to actually see an athlete from some small country actually do something, yes I root for them.

(PS - Anybody remember how the standard for the "Fastest Man in the World" got changed from the 100m to the 200m in 1996 when Americans weren't in the running to win gold in the 100 meters?)

I liked the brief story of the pregnant woman in the air rifle competition. That was a nice story.

I use to cheer for the underdog until everyone else started copying me and doing it too, now the overdog has no one to cheer for it so I now cheer for the true underdog: the overdog. Now you will all probably start cheering for the overdog and I'll go back to cheering for the underdog which is what I wanted to do in the first place anyways.

I am American and I love America. I almost always cheer for the American teams, the only exception being men's basketball. I dislike the loading of the teams with pros, and my favorite year was 2004 when Argentina won the Gold.
I would love to see more college players assigned to the team.

I went to the Atlanta Olympics and we had tickets for some of the events that NBC would not dare show because either the Americans suck at them, or because Americans in general do not follow them. What I learned from being at the Olympics was that contrary to what NBC would want us to believe, the Olympics are an international gathering, and not an American gathering. it is not all about the Americans
I noticed that the Badminton did not sell out when we were there. What most Americans may not know is that the Badminton game they play in the olympics is not like the game played in your grandma's backyard. It makes Ping pong and tennic look like a walk in the park.

We saw a team Handball game, it was a very fast moving, intense sport, combining skill speed and strength. We also attended a field hockey match between India and Pakistan. Talk about an intense rivalry, to these teams, that match WAS the olympics.
There are a lot of interesting sports that Americans will not appreciate or encourage. That is a shame, but we have the olympics to at least celebrate what the rest of the world plays and often plays well.

I am pulling for Mexico in football (soccer) I was disappointed that they did not win a medal in Archery today. They were favored to win gold.
As the above poster mentioned so well, I am not at all interested in the back stories about Micheal Phelps or any other american, even if they did overcome a pornography addiction to be in the olympics....I would prefer to have backstories on events that NBC decides to skip altogether or show 5 minutes of (like the swordfighting)

THE GREATEST UNDERDOG STORY EVER
Roberto Alvarez, Mexico Cross country skiing Calagary olympics 1988 Hopelssly out of medal contention, a snowstorm erupted and most of the participants dropped out whn it was clear that they would not place....Alvarez completed the race anyway.

lol

As I was reading this Ryan Seacrest was interviewing Michael Phelps and his family for like 10 minutes. Waste of airtime. What don't we already know about him? They could have been showing the highlights from various other events. NBC does not deserve the olympics.

I always root for the underdogs in sports. I will in the Olympics as well. Only a few Americans am I interested in watching, or winning. I could care less who wins most of these contests, other than I am rooting for those from smaller, poorer countries than the U.S.

In the women's World Cup, coming shortly after a deadly tsunami, I was seriously rooting for Japan against the Americans, little Japanese women against the 6 foot tall American cyborgs. Was very happy for Japan, they needed that win, it gave their country a lift and something to be happy about.

i dont think soccer should be in the olympics, their are enough soccer competitions and soccer is the main focus most of the year , the only team who care less about winning the soccer gold are team GB , this is the first time GB have even entered a team in the soccer

interesting comment about the hockey , outside america and canada , most people think of field hockey when they hear the word hockey , i realise that ice hockey is much bigger in north america
