2012 Women's Olympic 10,000 Preview: All The Makings of A Classic - Tirunesh Dibaba vs. Vivian Cheruiyot

According to letsrun, the matchup between Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia and Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya should be a classic. Tirunesh, aka "the babyfaced destroyer" has not lost a race since 2009, and while she was out with injuries, Vivian was winning everything in sight. The race will be Friday, 4:25 PM ET.

I have been a longtime fan of Dibaba, who is known as the 'baby faced destroyer' because in her early 20's she came out and flat destroyed people on the track, while looking all of 14 or 15 due to her cutie-pie, baby-faced looks.

Saw this and WoW these women were moving fast!! The guys who I was watching it with were watching in awe as Dibaba practically sprinted the last 500m. Amazing, esp after already running 24 laps!

Nice article from the NYT on the race:

It says that Tirunesh is considering moving up in distance to the marathon. It makes sense--I believe she is still only 27, and most of the money in running now is in the marathon.

Women's Olympic marathon is this Sunday morning. Too bad Desiree Davilia is out due to injury; I thought she might have a chance to medal. Now it's up to Shalene Flanagan and Kara Goucher. They are underdogs, but you never know.

I was fortunate enough to catch the race. It was pretty exciting for such an endurance test, especially in the final lap.
