Aussie Open is played in sweltering, oppressive heat, so it becomes something of a battle of attrition, whereas New York is much more mild in August.

The U.S. Open is more prestigious.

The U.S. Open is played in faster conditions (DecoTurf), which favors flatter ball hitters. This is why Nadal has struggled there until very recently.

The Aussie is played on slower plexicushion, which favors baseline grinders like Djokovic and Nadal.

The 5th Set in USO matches can go to a tiebreak. Doesn't happen Down Under (or any other major).

The USO has been played on all three surfaces. The Aussie hasn't.
