9 hours drive from each other how can that possibly be a rivalry?

All the best rivalries worldwide are local or if there is distance, like Barcelona and Real Madrid, it is because of history, politics etc.

So only teams that are close in proximity are to be considered "rivals" or their political standing constitutes a rivalry? Don't think so... there's many other variables that go into it.

I bet many hockey fans would agree with my Boston-Montreal-Toronto example.

Maybe a rivalry but not a world class rivalry. Chelsea and Man United have a rivalry but it doesn't match Man United and Liverpool because despite the success of Man United and Chelsea the dislike between people from Manchester and Liverpool and their proximity makes it more fierce.

The most obvious four-way rivalry in the NFL is the NFC East.

Five-way rivalry - the Philadelphia Big Five in college basketball (though those rivalries were generally much bigger in the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s)

PSU,
I agree with you brother..
The Bruins-Canadiens-Leafs are all intense rivals.. They are historical rivals bcuz of their shared membership as early NHLers (Original Six).
And the truth is they're not far from each other when u place them in context of the entire continental NHL market (San Jose, Tampa Bay, Vancouver, etc.) /peace.

All I am saying is surely there are more fierce localized rivalries in the US than Boston and Toronto.

Long distance rivalries occur but usually only last for as long as the teams are relevant. I'm thinking the way it was with the Celtics, Sixers and Lakers in the days of Bird, Magic and Julius.

Rangers/Flyers/Islanders. Hockey rivalries are the best because they play each other in the playoffs so often and they kill each other.
