One thing nice about golf is that while you're on the course, all your other problems seem to fade away. You can't really worry about other stuff. If you're playing with friends, it is a great social time. Also, it is basically you against the course - there is some luck but it seems as you get better, you also get luckier.

Tennis has falling tv ratings but more people are playing the sport. It's also a cheap sport to play. Golf has both lower ratings and much fewer people playing the sport. It's a slow sport with high up front costs. Today's America like fast things and fewer people have disposable income for private golf resorts.

Yes it can be cheap if there are public courts. Some areas though have only private courts and the membership fees at these places are absurd. It explains why tennis isn't very popular here (my area) but was far more popular where I grew up.
Those crazy tennis clubs are really hurting the sport. There's absolutely no good reason to charge 200 bucks a month for access to a flat surface with a net. None at all.

I returned to tennis. But I still see courts not being used - don't think it'll ever get back to the popularity of the 70s, 80s....guess it'll take a great American tennis player to get Americans interested again.....

Here in Tampa: $60/month for a single to play on good clay courts here. That's two rounds of golf in FLA.

Is that not glory hunting?
