Why people talking about Phelps 'immortality'--he lost didn't he? (popularity, record, athletes)

You do realize that "immortality" means the ability to live forever, right? If you are hanging around people talking about Phelps (or anyone) having the ability to live forever, you are hanging around idiots.
And why would the ability to live forever (a trait no one in our history has possessed) tie into someone's athletic skill at a particular sport?
oh...there was an article online yesterday (nytimes I think)

None and I do not criticize those who have earned them or even competed. We are a culture of critics while sitting in our comfy living rooms watching.
my question were not pointed at you, but rather the OP that you originally quoted, i figured that you would have noted that when you read my post and saw that i quoted him before you.

His greatness lies not in the Rio Olympics, although he has done great there. It is in his longevity - 4 Olympics, more medals than any Olympian in history, with no one else even being close. So of course he is not a god, but his accomplishment is noteworthy and unique.
There's plenty of past Olympic or professional sport stars that were "immortal" in their day, but have been forgotten by most today. There is no "immortal" Everyone is eventually forgotten, except for rare exceptions. You could go to a "Hall of Fame" today and find that it is full of people you've probably never heard of.
I personally find it sad that the vast majority of these athletes have spent years working out, exercising practicing, spending years of the most important years of their life working for something with little or no enduring value. They'd have been much better off putting that effort into learning a trade or getting an education for a good job.

Babe Ruth was thrown out trying to steal 2nd base to end the 1926 World Series. Sometimes you come in 2nd.
