I especially cheer for the smaller nations who don't typically rack up on the medals. Like Fiji winning their first ever Olympic gold in rugby. What an amazing win for them!

I root for Jamaica! ( I've spent some time there )

Also, pretty much any athlete, except those accused of doping. Unless they are up against my USA gymnastics girls.
I love those girls. They are such an amazing little bunch.

No. I root for my home team -- the American athletes.

If another country wins, that's fine. I'm happy for them. I enjoy the spirit of the Games.

But I cheer on my own countrymen.

I tend to go for the UK, Canada and Jamaica when they're not competing against the US.

Sure.

It would be a better thing for everyone if we always rooted for the person who was best, or who tried the hardest, or who exhibited the best sportsmanship, or who was the most endearing. It would be better in any country's sports too, not to root mindlessly for the home team, but to consciously choose a team to favor.

In regards to the Olympics most people don't know too much about the athletes from other countries. At least in the sporting events that aren't super popular...

I don't even watch the olympics. So I don't have to worry about this.

Absolutely!
Especially for a very exciting game!

Venus Williams vs Kirsten Flipkens, I actually rooted for Flipkens! Bc she has a more varied style of playing that actually mirrors mine! It was so exciting!
Never even heard of this chick before and I was hooting and hollering.

How many of them are actually from Fiji, and not from some other country that agreed to play for Fiji just so they could be in the olympics?
