Asian women age better than Western ones on average, but this is beyond the pale. She is even wearing makeup (which ages you) in that picture because you really have to under the harsh lights. Also, I wouldn't put it past the Chinese government to engage in practices that stunt the growth of promising gymnasts.

I was far more impressed with the 41 year old Olympian gymnast. She was gutsy and awesome!

And Simone Biles...I really liked her. Wow, she was spectacular.

Chinese students may be "driven", but their suicide rate reflects that.
China Exam System Drives Student Suicides - Bloomberg

I'd rather have an alive, less stressed child who actually can ENJOY their childhood and not be studying 10-12 hours a day. There is more to life than studying 24/7/365.

Suicide rate in China is not high. Maybe you confused China with South Korea?

American kids have a lot of pressure too. They are worried about bullies, getting laid, etc. Academically talented but physically weak children are often marginalized and have no friends, which does not happen in China.

When I was a child in China, I studied a lot but I do not think I was very stressful. Gradually you just deal with the reality, whether you are good or not. You just realize that no matter how hard you try, you cannot always be the best, but you cannot give up.

Yes, government corruption over there is totally unheard of! They treat their people wonderfully, and never violate ANY human rights. Ever.

When young Chinese gymnasts leave home to train they are kept in dresser drawers overnight so they cannot grow any bigger than the drawer.

I thought the girls looked like every other young Asian girl I have ever seen. Women in Asia look young and usually have great skin. Whether genetics, lifestyle, diet, or whatever... they maintain a youthful appearance a lot longer than Westerners do. I think the same 'phenomenon' can be seen in a lot of the African countries, as well.

I wasn't so much as concerned about their youthful appearance as I was their bodies. For gymnasts, the lot of them had incredibly thin thighs with very little muscle. I know they have a slighter frame, but they looked malnourished, not naturally skinny.

While I agree that Westerners in general make the statement simply based on looks, there is a solid precedent for for this suspicion.

He Kexin and a few other Chinese gymnasts magically aged two years before the Olympics. Registries of competitions, Media reports from the state run Chinese news agency, and other documents, seem to back up the claims that the girls were not 16 at the time of the Olympics, but were 14.
