Yeah, Lochte made some dumb mistakes that shouldn't be made in a foreign country, but I seriously doubt that these particular Brazilian cops were totally blameless when it comes to this incident. Corruption seems to be what really drives that country (including their police force) when all is said and done. Stay tuned!

Brazil is a corrupt developing country, and Rio is well known as a dangerous city, with drug-lords and thugs etc.
People posing as police officers is not an unusual crime either, so the story was believable at the time.
But, Lochte was implicated in drunken disorderly conduct, and created a public nuisance by fabricating a crime.
He should possibly pay a fine for causing this commotion, but the damage to his career and credibility is much worse, and more than enough to deal with. (esp since he is really towards the end of his swimming career now).

More than a "Dumb" mistake. It became an International Incident. You know absolutely nothing about these Brazilian Security Guards, but you know everything about Lochtey now. T suggest that these guards where extorting or robbing these Hooligans in broad daylight, with dozens of people around, listening to every word, is ludicrous. These are big guys, and if they where drunk and got aggressive, I would have been very quick to pull out a gun, and so would any smart person. People get shot in this Country, every day for doing things like that. You don't get aggressive with a Cop or Security Guard, that's armed. Its not rocket science.

Lochtey is Toast. He committed Career Suicide. He finished it off with a shot to the head, when he refused to say he lied, and used "Exaggerated" instead, and still defended parts of his lie, as if it was not a lie. He still has to wonder where and how deep, the Olympic Committee, and the National Swim Team, will swing their sword, which they say is coming.

Exactly, the latest reports are saying he will be on Dancing with the Stars

He will have to work really hard for a long time to come back from this. But then again, he's already earned millions from his swimming so he may just decide to retire to the tropics.
