The first three big major events this year are all featuring two players at the Finals. But, why is Federer consistently beating Nadal now? It's not like Nadal is injured or not playing well. He made it to finals at three major events this year, beating everyone but Federer. What is Federer doing now that he was not 10 years ago?
Nadal is old. His movement is not close to what it was even 3 years ago, and even though he's talented enough to remain in the Top 10, he no longer has what it takes to be a consistent threat to the top guys week in, week out.
Nobody's taking anything away from Federer, but it's clear Nadal is very far from the player he once was (even farther from his peak than Federer is today). He's had some major injuries over the years, including a wrist injury, which is the worst injury for a tennis player. Again, he is good enough to beat most of the field, but he will continue to struggle against the top of the pack, and he will also continue to struggle against less talented players he would easily dispose of in his prime. He doesn't have a lethal serve to rely on like Federer does so he can't as easily compensate for his diminished mobility.
Well, Nadal is closer in age to Djokovic and Murray, Federer is the "old" one here. So compliments to Federer for his perservering talents.
Nadal's style of play is aggresive to the point of over-worked, which likely has lead to his numerous injuries and they start to weigh more and more against him with age. It was his youth that let him bounce back quicker. But who knows, maybe he'll find a different style, perhaps this is just a learning period for his comeback. Federer definitely had a lull period.

This.
As a non-fan of both players, Federer has come back refreshed and worked on things that were a weakness, namely Nadal's heavy topspin to his backhand.
His serve is still there, but not quite as reliant on it as someone like Sampras was. (who had arguably the best serve, 1st and 2nd, of all time).
Nadal has definitely declined more, due to his style of play, but he is still in the finals of Majors and Masters this year, so is still above most of the field.
Djokovic and current World Number 1 Murray have also disappointed and not performed well this year, which has given rise to more Fedal meetings than we are used to seeing.

In other words, this sport is still dominated by the Big 4.
I feel bad for the ones who are in the top 50, and also within the ages of 25 through 35. Without the Big 4, they all have shots of winning Grand Slams, or at least ATP 1000 events. Chances of lifting one of those trophies was extremely slim for the past 10 years AND for at least a couple more years.
