Overview, by an insider

Russia’s Olympic Cheating, Unpunished

Of the medals fraudulently earned by Russian athletes at the Sochi Games, not one has been withdrawn by the International Olympic Committee. The Winter Olympics begins in South Korea in February, yet it is unclear whether the I.O.C. can finish its own investigations of Russian doping before the competition starts. (WADA, which enforces the world antidoping code, is separate from the I.O.C.) Of the two I.O.C. commissions established to investigate Russian doping, only one asked for my evidence — and that was just two weeks ago. Russia is emboldened when no one holds it to account, and we have all seen the consequences.

A lot depends on who's doing the cheating; those of us who recall the obscenities of the 1972 games (collusion with a Cuban "referee" to steal the basketball gold medal, and the drug issue involving swimmer Rick DeMont can attest that there was one standard for the as-always-resented Americans, and another for everyone else.

The politicization of sport has always been an embarrassment, and unfortunately, it's spreading; the Olympic Games are a mockery -- and ought to be further privatized. But it's the thug nations, going all the way back to Hitler's Germany, who've always taken advantage of this, and the lukewarm one-worlders, best personified by the senescent Avery Brundage, who've never displayed enough spine to stand up to them. The 1984 games were a whopping success precisely because of who wasn't there.
