R2: Nadal def. Pella 62 61 61
Nadal is hitting the ball harder now than I've ever seen him hit the ball on clay.
Didn't hit as hard in the first match.
I noticed a couple of ball marks contradicted hawkeye (hawkeye shown by the commentators).
This shows you why hawkeye should never be employed for clay events, as it'll lead to massive arguments between the player and umpire when a ball mark shows something different to hawkeye.
Let's see if he can finally go one better this time, and get to the QFs at least.
Baby Fed, aka 4th seed Grigor Dimitrov, has crashed out though to Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco.
Novak Djokovic is also through to the 4th Round, and up against "Nando" above.
Nadal will play Richard Gasquet tonight local time, who has not beaten Nadal since Juniors.
Nadal should make mincemeat of him one would think, on this court and this surface.
A Zverev survives another scare, and gets to the 4th Round of a Slam again ( his best Slam result):
Yeah Thiem would a comfortable favorite vs Zverev based on what I've seen.
Roland Garros suits Thiem, plenty of time for Thiem to prepare that big backhand.
I mean Nadal hammered Thiem 63 64 60 at last year's Roland Garros (even after Thiem had beaten Nadal at Rome last year 64 63), but Thiem would beat everyone else probably.
But I hope Djokovic beats Thiem because the more times Nadal plays Djokovic the better.
He will now play Dominic Thiem, which should be an absolute cracker, after the Austrian defeated Kei Nishikori.
Novak Djokovic has also got past crafty Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco, who is always a dangerous floater in Slams, to set up a Quarter final with Italian Marco Cecchinato - who is a virtual unknown in tennis terms.
Serena Williams will also play Maria Sharapova today in the 4th Round of RG, in the ultimate grudge match.
Both players openly do not like each other, and Serena has added some fuel to the fire lately:
At the end of the day, Serena owns Maria in the Head to Head, 19-2, and is inside her head as well.
Sharapova should start slight favorite though, due to Serena's lack of match play in the last 12 months.
Novak Djokovic has also got past crafty Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco, who is always a dangerous floater in Slams, to set up a Quarter final with Italian Marco Cecchinato - who is a virtual unknown in tennis terms.
Verdasco had foot injury but the bigger problem in his career is an overall lack of consistent effort, and you could see he mentally quit this match as soon as his foot became an issue.
Just like last year Djokovic's tournament doesn't begin until Djokovic-Thiem, last year Thiem beat Djokovic 76 63 60 after Djokovic had beaten Thiem 61 60 at Rome.
This year Djokovic looks a shadow of himself (and Zverev looks even worse, so I assume Thiem will reach the semis), but I'm hoping Thiem implodes mentally, because we need Nadal-Djokovic.
The womens final should be a cracker, both great counter punchers and court strategists.
Halep is still chasing her elusive first Grand Slam title, Stephens going for her 2nd.
I know it’s a long shot but I’m rooting for Delpotro for the win. Some really smart play against Cilic.
I agree Del Potro knew exactly what Cilic was going to do.
Just extend the rally on big points and Cilic implodes.
Some people take too many risks against Cilic, but you really don't have to in these big slam matches, because Cilic is extremely uptight and emotionally unstable.
The one time Cilic was able to keep his emotions together for a whole 2 weeks was of course 2014 US Open, but even then you could see he was riding his emotions and always tense.
