If we grant that soccer is the most prestigious sport to win a world championship in, what would you say is the 2nd?

By prestigious I mean what sport does the winning country take massive pride in as if the whole country "won" something big.

My vote goes to hockey. I know that it's regional, but so are most of the other sports after soccer, and hockey is big among some very powerful/rich countries. I can't help but imagine the publicity and tension of a USA versus Russia Gold medal hockey game (with professionals allowed).

I know this is a very subjective topic, but that's what makes it fun.

On a national level (like country v. country) or by pro sport (like Tornoto Raptors v. NY Knicks)?

If we count USA vs everyone else, the Ryder Cup is a pretty big deal in golf.

To fit your criteria of prestige, I would suggest it would need to be a world cup type format, and the pinnacle of that sport - pre-eminent over the professional league, and therefore Hockey wouldn't be in the discussion.

Probably Rugby then Cricket. Their respective World Cups fit these criteria, have an enormous amount of people watching, and "the winning country take massive pride in as if the whole country "won" something big".

Boxing maybe?

100 metres maybe.

hockey, as it's the main event of the winter Olympics and winning would be a big deal for any of the main competitors.

rugby.

basketball is quite popular but i think that for many of the typical contenders - USA, Spain, France, Argentina, winning isn't that big a deal.
