I don't care much for NASCAR, but I don't think you have any idea just how much athleticism it takes to wrestle the steering wheel in a 3,000+ pound car generating an additional several hundred pounds of downforce (with no power steering by the way, and no power brakes either) as you try to hold a very precise line at 200mph where a few inches off your line could cause an 8-car crash, fighting G-forces that would cause some people to black out, inside a 135-degree cockpit while you're wearing a stifling flame-retardant suit for 3 hours. NASCAR drivers can lose as much as 10 pounds in a SINGLE RACE from dehydration, and yet they still have to stay alert enough to do all the stuff I just described for hours on end. Try it some day and tell me these guys aren't athletes. The days of the stereotypical fat-slob gomer competing at the highest levels of NASCAR are long gone.

Hate to burst your bubble, Drover, but NASCAR has been using power steering in their vehicles for quite some time now.

Well, you learn something new every day. And I still contend that people seriously underestimate how much athletic ability is required to drive competitively.

No way should any type of car racing make it in the Olympics. I understand it takes skill but it is not based on a persons pure athleticism and that is what the olympics are about. Athlete versus athlete, not motor versus motor.

I agree with you totally, but there are already sports in the Olympics that do not rest singularly on athletic capability: Equestrian is a prime example and the argument could be made that curling fits this category too.
I don't think equestrian has any business in the Olympics personally but I do like curling as a curiosity at least.

I dont like Equestrian as an Olympic even either. If I could choose an event to pull, that would be it.
Curling still takes skill and the people are out there doing something so I can see how that fits. From what I understand, it is harder than it looks.

I see lacrosse is closely in second, but I have to question how many other countries outside of North (maybe Central?) America actually play this sport. Great sport though.

LaCrosse is growing across Europe and parts of Asia now, It's probably too early to add it to the Olympics though, my guess is it'll be an event by 2020.
