Why are Professional Teams allowed?
Let me preface by saying that i am not a fan of overpaid, big ego US sports players, ie, the kobe bryant types. i think that the olympics should be a place for amateurs who aren't as commercialized as big time players. why did the IOC ever introduce these players to the Olympics?

It's not only the US that allow pros you know? I suggest that you check out the athletes from every other country in sports such as soccer, baseball, bowling, hockey, etc. If you don't like our guys playing, fine, but don't act like other athletes from outside of the US are incapable of having poor behavior (check out the Cuban kickboxer).

True. We were one of the last to let pros go because everyone else was doing it.

Well, I mean China took girls at age 3 and trained them to be gymnasts so while they don't make millions, their whole life has been training for the Olympics.

Tennis in the Olympics I think should be amateur or even scrapped why? well to me they don't take the Olympics serious its not the biggest achievement to win the Olympic gold for tennis players and I get the impression most just want to be somewhere else. Watching this Olympics most of the top players didn't play to the standard you see in Grand Slams and I know many have schedules to be elsewhere shortly after the Olympics so why bother turning up. This doesn't apply to all of the tennis players but most and as a tennis fan I was quite disappointed.

The number of high-level athletes who are truly amateurs is small indeed.
Almost every sport imaginable has a professional aspect to it: triathlon, kayaking, track and field.
If "pros" weren't allowed, the calibre of Olympic competition would drop considerably and the IOC and various country Olympic committees wouldn't make nearly as much money from the games.

Nobody is paid for competing in the Olympics, thus they are not professionals.
Chew on that.

If a professional basketball player chooses to play in an unpaid game, does he stop being a professional basketball player?

No, but his style of play has to change. In the NBA, it's all about the individual player's show. To win at basketball in the Olympics, it's all about team.

If an Olympian earns endorsements from Nike and Wheaties, are they not being paid?
