Default Taking up golf?????

I know zero about the game. But, I'm interested in learning and playing. Basically for something to do. Drinking beer and hacking at the ball is not what I want. I'm looking for an enjoyable hobby and take improving in play serious. How should I go about it?

Speaking from experience (the one you are looking NOT to have ), I would get lessons first. I did not, and now I dislike the game so much by the 9th hole, that it's all I can do but have a drink and enjoy the cart ride through the second 9. Golf takes practice and study if you want to be good at it (just like anything, I suppose) and to that end, start with learning from a professional.

AnotherDayInParadise, is right go seek a golf pro for some lessons. I started out myself and picked up some bad habits that once I kept doing became hard to break. If you get someone who knows what they are doing they can teach you a good swing with good form right off the bat. That will save you from the frustration and anger I get when I hit a nice drive then shank and slice the next 6 shots.
