25th anniversary of Black Saturday
7-14 is the 25th anniversary of Black Saturday. This is when Vince K. Mcmahon and the WWF (now E) took over the saturday time slot for Georgia Championship Wrestling. The company was suffering financial problems due to some very bad money management decisions. Jim Barnette, the supposed major problem was forced out by shareholders and now with the competition, WWF. Barnette initially sold Mcmahon shares in a NYC restaurant after a card at MSG. Then months later, the Briscos ending their run as a team in the Mid Atlantic area and upset with the situation in Georgia secretly sold their shares and got other minority owners to do the same. Booker and shareholder, Ole (Rogowski) Anderson was largely unaware of all this and taken by surprise as VKM and Gorilla Monsoon stormed into the Atlanta Locker room with paperwork announcing the takeover and inviting wrestlers to either stay and work for him, or leave if they did'nt like it. The WWF was supposed to have a studio show, but ultimately only showed clips from matches that already were on other channels. Ted Turner owner of WTBS was not pleased with Mcmahon and the two butted heads. Ole was outraged that he had been double crossed and sued the Mcmahon family. VKM offered Ole a position in the WWF, but being the old schooler he flat out turned it down. The court case was thrown out. After months of turmoil between Turner and Mcmahon along with ratings that were not as good as expected the time slot was sold to competitor Jim Crockett Jr. for 1 million dollars. There was also talk of Bill Watts who had a show on WTBS very briefly taking over, but ultimately Crockett stepped in. The Georgia promotion which was revamped and running at a different time slot merged with Jim Crockett promotions. The spend thrifty Crockett who overextended himself would ultimately hit financial hardships due to many bad decisions and ultimately sell his whole company to Ted Turner.
