NFL in San Antonio. San Antonio/Austin areas will be combined to form one unified metropolitan area by 2013. Thus making it the 15th largest media market in the country.

NFL, MLB will be coming to the area. Bank on it.

Dayton, OH and Cincinnati are much closer to each other than San Antonio and Austin are. Despite the fact that there is almost continuos development bewteen the two; they are not yet one single metro area. Though many think that could happen in this census, it has taken a lot of sprawling and filling up of open country side for that to happen. San Antonio and Austin are not going to acquire that before 2013.

For one thing Cincinnati already has NFL and MLB teams in the area. Secondly we're talking about a much larger area than Cincinnati-Dayton here, population wise. Also you don't have to have solid development between two cities for them to qualified as an SMSA. You just have to have a lot of development and economic activity in the region to qualify. And lastly the growth rate of San Antonio-Austin is much, much greater than the region you speak of. It's in the cards.

I will defer to the nay-sayers in this thread:

San Austin Metro

and leave it alone.

Not so fast there. First owners of the Cowboys and Texans would have sign off on a third Texas team. I'm not sure they want to dilute a very enthusiastic fan base unless the perspective owners of a SA-Austin team puts some serious money on the table.

Second aside from Michael Dell can you tell me of a high roller or a group of high rollers that are seriously willing to put up the $500 million to $1 billion it would cost to invest in a team?

I spent about 11 years living in the San Antonio area the economic growth in the San Antonio to Austin corridor has really taken off on the past decade but the question in my mind is does the area have enough high income earners and large corporations needed to sustain major league baseball and football.

The last issue is what kind of bid is made to the NFL or MLB. A unified Austin-San Antonio bid as region or an Austin bid or a San Antonio bid? In my mind a regional bid makes more sense but it requires an unified effort that may be easier said than done.

I don't think San Antonio can bring in 25k or more fans every game for a 81 game season.
