There is a reason why when people talk about a city and sports you will often hear them say "The Big Four" or Milwaukee has 2 of the big 4 or Denver has all of the big 4 sports.

2. NBA- imo is clearly more popular than the MLB, bigger stars and more nationally popular teams (Lakers, Celtics, Knicks, Heat, Bulls) gets much more attention on ESPN. LeBron James and Kobe Bryant are currently bigger stars than anyone in the MLB and NHL.

3. MLB- Declining and other than the Yankees and Red Sox none of their teams seem to have that huge of an appeal outside of their immediate area.

4. NHL- Regionally popular and seemingly getting more popular nationally each day, stars like Ovechkin and Crosby and teams in major markets Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins and LA Kings recently winning Stanley Cups help.
NFL...Do you think that gambling has a little bit to do with the NFL`s popularity? Not to mention the fact that they play a limited amount of games?

The NFL thrives in part because of gambling, but also because it's tremendously violent and the sport is marketed very well to the public.
