The fighting is an accepted part of hockey by the players and fans. Thus its different from a hockey player starting a fight in a club.

The NBA gets a bad rap because its players are covered in tats and the uniforms let everyone see them. Mainstream America still associates tattoos with criminality even though nowadays it should be more associated with losers trying to look cool.

Agree. NBA used to be but is not as bad as it was 2001-2005 AI era.

If we're talking about sheer numbers, it has to be boxing...and I'm a boxer. Nearly every pro boxer is from some kind of ghetto neighborhood (or they were born into the sport), and many of them have violent criminal records.

Bernard Hopkins was in prison for armed robbery.
Mike Tyson for rape.
Hasim Rahman was an enforcer for drug dealers.
James Kirkland is still in prison.
Archie Ray Marquez is a prospect who beats the hell out of his wife.
Edwin Valero was a 27-0 champ with 27 knockouts who recently murdered his wife and then killed himself.
Donovan George is a prospect who has done time for violent crimes.
The list goes on forever. When you have a sport where poor people beat each other up for money, there's going to be violence outside the ring.

That being said, the NFL has a lot of thugs too, Rae Carruth and Lawrence Phillips come to mind.

Hockey "fights" are basically staged events, and hockey players are rarely in violent crimes off the ice----unlike NFL and NBA thuggery, which is off the field...the problem with sports in America is that starting in middle school, football and basketball players are given special elite status in our schools, given special privileges, tutoring, easier classes...this goes into high school then college then pro NBA and NFL....schools SHOULD emphasize academic subjects and have pep rallies for debate teams and for the smartest, best students. Instead, all the focus in schools is on the athletes---this is unfair to the intelligent kids, and creates a special group of favored so called "student"-athletes....a society will progress to the extent that it is led by the smartest people...it will not progress by idolizing people who do well playing a brutal meaningless game...in today's world, sports, the lottery, and inane television trash are the opiate of the masses...
