I managed a privately owned jewelry store. Product ran from $20 to $8000. Staff needed a good knowledge of gems, cheerful and polite personality in the hope of building regular cliental.
Most of the staff worked 4-7 hours a day at a basic $20 an hour or 20% of their gross sales. Anyone selling a $500 item would get $100 commission, so basic hourly rate or commission, whichever was the greater. Due to the inventory and honesty required, I only hired people with their own home, they had more to lose.
Larger Corporations have to operate differently and rents in Taney County are reletively inexpensive compared to big cities. Earning $280 pw being 40 hours x say $7 an hour, a monthly rent of $250, food and phone can be achieved. Forget about savings or an expensive car. However shared accommodation and other cost savings can be looked at.
To prove my theory, I lived on $21 for food over one week in January 1992. Bread, eggs, soup, corn dodgers, cheap chicken cuts. I proved a point to a young person who complained about being broke every winter. That same person had breakfast at McD's or Wendy's every day. A frying pan and a coffee pot can help in the poorer months.
Minimum wage in Missouri has risen from $5.15 in 2006 to $7.25 in July 2009.
Fact is that unless one has an advanced skillset to offer in rural areas you won't find jobs paying much more than slightly above minimum. Even college graduates often start at jobs paying $10/hr. and have to work their way up. When jobs don't exist people have to get creative and often find careers and get certifications that allow them to earn more or start their own business.
Non-union construction jobs in rural Missouri pay between $25-$35/hr. Agricultural wages generally lower. Low-level medical certifications again hover slightly above medical wage.

Ok all this is well and nice. But my wife has went to school for years in the Medical field. All she could find was Home Health Care $8.50 an hour, even though she was working 100+ hours a week they didn't need to pay over time. She did get paid milage until the price of Gas went up and the company couldn't afford to no longer pay it.And in turn my wife couldn't afford to continue to drive over half the state taking care of clients.
She went to school for Computer Networking went to Springfield after quiting her Job to work for a company setting up Satelite Internet the Guy training her said he wouldn't have a woman working under him so let her go before she got started. She called the Main Office they told her nothing could be done because in Missouri a company don't have to have a reason for letting anyone go.
She is at present getting ready to go back to College for Computer Programing.I'm getting tierd of her going to school all the time she is a very hard worker I just wish she could find a Good Paying Job for the rest of her life, she is 53.
As far as Nonunion Construction my Son was working Construction in Springfield making $6 an hour another person came said he would work for $4 an hour.Guess how long my Son had his Job? This was last Spring.Minimun wage don't mean anything now days.
To the above poster^^^ if your son was only being paid $6. an hour that is against the law and he should have turned that employer in to the department of Missouri labor. If he had paystubs stating as such he could turn them in as proof.

If he had turned them in he would be without a Job (very stupid)He was doing as everyone else now days getting paid in cash. When he was getting paid by check in Springfield it was Direct Deposit and they would short him bulk of the time.
There is way to get around Regs and employers are taking advatage in Springfield.I know saying it and proving it are two different things.
These $ figures interest me. Are these refering to recent times with the economy and all? I was wondering how Branson is doing from a business pespective? Can owners afford to pay more or is there a greed factor?

Absolutely. And, he still could if so inclined. One copy to the MO Dept. of labor, another to the MO-AG's office, another to your local elected state Rep., and another to the local newspaper.
Allied health jobs usually pay low unless someone is degreed in a specific field. Has your wife investigated medical records computerization as that is what is in demand with her two fields of study. Quite frankly it sounds as though she could make more money staying at home and opening a state certified daycare as opposed to what she is doing currently.

Got to have proof with my Son,nothing is on paper, the Person is paid cash no Taxes or anything is taken out.If a person don't want to work for $4-$6 an hour they can go on down the road.
My wife graduated from School as a M.A. worked at the State Prison. We moved here 16 years ago the market has been flooded in the area as to where at her age they won't hire her.
Day Care is out of the question because there is no way in and out of here, they can't get Emergency Vehicals back here much less a car.
She is working in Advertizing with our Daughter in Law problem is our Daughter in Law is getting lazy and not doing her part so things are looking unsure as to what is going to happen at this time.
$8 is pretty common. I hire a couple times a year for a f100 retail company, and honestly with the cost of doing business in general, my P&L really only allows me that rate of pay for the jobs I have. Most businesses are surviving on pretty slim profits if at all, and now with healthcare costs doubling next year, I expect we will have little or no money for any raises this year. but the good news is that with the terrible economy we have now is causing deflation, so $8-10 will buy more. I have guys in suits with BAs coming in almost every day looking for those $8 jobs, and hundreds of apps of people with no degree wanting $15-20 wondering why they cant find a job...

$4-6/hr under the table has similar buying power to a regular $8 job when you consider taxes. if your son had direct deposit, that would be a good start, I bet they could make a case from that. people dont deposit money to non-relatives for nothing.
