I would look at Forsyth as was suggested in an earlier post. I don't know if it is the "Mayberry" that you are looking for, but it is a nice little town with some beautiful country surrounding it. It is off the Springfield-Branson path but not far enough to be isolated. My family has lived in this area for 5 generations, so I am a bit partial however

Check out the areas south of Nixa. Lots of land. We have people riding horses across the rolling hills just behind our property all the time. We sit in our living room and watch the beauty of the hills in the background with the gorgeous animals, just like in the movies. Email for further info.

Check out Marshfield or Fair Grove.

Either town is a short commute to Springfield (20-30 min).

Marshfield - classic square with courthouse in the center and shops around the square. The rest of the town has lots of small fast food restaurants, a Wal-Mart Supercenter (new), a farm and home center, a couple of grocery stores and a strip "mall". I lived there for a little over a year. My brother still lives there and my great grandparents lived there as well. The first George Bush attended the 4th of July parade in Marshfield on a couple of occassions due to the classic small town atmosphere. They have a small fair every summer. It has a lot of what you are looking for, I think, while still being close enough to Springfield for job opportunities. (I commuted from Springfield to Marshfield to teach. It's a fast commute on a nice interstate.)

Fair Grove - my other set of great-great grandparents homesteaded here. I graduated from FGHS. It's a much smaller town and their "square" is actually called 'the hill'. There is an open area with antique shops surrounding it. There is an Old Mill that was restored and every year they have a Fall Festival the last weekend of September. As far as city conveniences go, Fair Grove had nothing but a grocery store, a convenience store, and a liquor store for a long time. In the past several years they've gotten a Dollar General, a big farm and home, a Subway, and a few other things I can't recall right now. I don't go out there as often although my MIL and parents still live in the area. Oh, and a plus about Fair Grove is that they are finally putting in the 4-lane highway from Springfield to FG. It will be and even quicker and more convenient drive once that is finished. It wasn't bad with the 2-lane, but I am spoiled with 4-lanes now and wouldn't want to live anywhere that required a commute on a 2-lane route.

Nixa and Ozark are nice, too, but they are mentioned a lot on this forum and and I'm not as famliiar with them since I only recenlty moved closer to them. They are both becoming a lot more city-like. Ozark is planning a cool makeover in one of their older areas, but it will be the urban center-city style. I believe they have the classic square with little shops, but I'm only a recent Ozarkian so I'm not as familiar with it. I don't even think Nixa has a classic square.

I was pleasanty surprised that Fair Grove has a website!

Marshfield has one too, but it could be improved considering that it's a larger town than FG.
