Sink holes in Christian county?
O.k Shadow has scared me sensless! I started investigating what karst means and now that I know Im not sure if I can bring myself to move. Turns out 3/5 of the state of Mo has karst undergrounds! Especially in Christain county! Thats where I wanted to move! How is one to know if your property will be safe?

 silly lady...
Do you not realize that its part of my technique to get the ladies to collapse at my feet, to have them scared, so that they'll come running to me for protection..
Ok, as said in the pm, there are karst areas, there are old abandoned mines, there are sinkholes, there are caves, there are this and that... Yes, such can collapse. Yes, such can swallow your entire house. Yes, such can destroy property and/or health. Yet, as I said, I would NOT let such detour anyone from living in such an area - the main point is to be aware; aware of the potentials, so that you have then the knowledge of what to look for when touring and/or building...
However!!! The odds of such are very low. How many miles do you drive? How many people die every day in a vehicle-related accident? You have 4-wheelers, right - how many injuries are caused per year by riding such equipment? Now,,, how often does a karst-related feature cause an accident/injury/death?
For example of the not so good - what is termed the Tri-State district is riddled with underground mines from the old Lead District there. Take the latest news blurb, just out today: The Associated Press: Mines Crumble Under Kansas Town (broken link)
Simply put, a sinkhole will form layers of ground collapse into an empty void underlying that ground, usually when water has dissolved that material over many many years [thousands and thousands, to maybe just a few - depending upon the size, the amount of weight over the void, etc]. Often times, heavy rains, esp. after a long drought, will make the process much more efficient, causing a very fast acting collapse - which then can be quite dangerous if there was little/no warning before hand.
The nasty hole that devoured part of Nixa: USGS - Mid-Continent Geographic Science Center
And if you look at this, you will also see that much of the entire country is then 'unsafe' due to karst... Sinkholes
BTW, us cavers are very happy that there is so much karst within Missouri... Very interesting features, such as losing streams, karst windows, springs, caves, etc. are all part of that wonderful world. Take a trip someday when ya get to MO, and go to Ha Ha Tonka and/or Grand Gulf State Parks, the various beautiful springs, tour caves, and so forth... Heck, someday venture into Perry County, and you will a lot of depressions in the ground of various sizes - all of these are sinkholes... but biggest problem there, as in all such places, IMHO, is the idiots that dump their trash into them - polluting the groundwater, poisoning the critters and potentially their own drinking water.
More info can also be found in this .pdf brochure: USGS FS 2007-3060: Sinkholes
And a good depiction of how typical sinkholes in MO can form: Sinkhole Remediation - Collapse Potential Study - MoDNR

I remember the news about the sinkhole in Nixa and all the damage. Yeah, it did happen in ChristCo but it can happen anywhere in the region. I remember driving down E. Cherry St. when I lived in Springfield and seeing various sinkholes right in the neighborhood where the homes were at least 30 to 40 years old and there wasn't a problem. Everywhere has some sort of natural hazards specific to the region. Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Mudslides, Floods, etc, etc,
I remember one of my geology professors teaching about karst and sinkholes and told a story about how a sinkhole developed directly underneath the sewage lagoon for the town of Cabool. A whirlpool started right in the middle and pretty much took it all down like a sink drain. MMMMM!!!

Dear girl, I can't imagine whom you might have upset...
This is a place where we can all air our thoughts...just sittin' here 'round the cyber-porch jawin'...
I know. I'm from CA...grew up straddling the San Andreas fault line.
Rode out a 7.3 in a tub full of bubbles one evening...felt the big one that collapsed the Bay Bridge sittin' in my back yard in Sac!
(80 miles away... )
I've talked to more'n half a dozen midwesterners that wouldn't visit SF to save their lives 'cause they're sure they'd be swallowed up while they're in the McD drive thru...
Seems like every cute couple that sits across from me desk wants to know about tornados-ticks-chiggers-n-humidity...
There's natural disasters everywhere...beats the heck out of man-made disasters, tho...
...like gang wars 'n such...
But without sounding like a goldurn preacher, I'm tryin' to remember how many times we're told to FEAR NOT...for you-know-who is with us.
Just a thought.
