I'm with ShadowCaver on this one. Get out and about long before season and just introduce yourself, ask around, have a clean appearance, be friendly and straight-up.
If you do find a willing landowner, offer to spend a Saturday off season and do chores around the place. Maybe send a Chrsitmas card. Build a good old fashioned relationship!
Some folks will be friendly and others won't, but the more folks you speak with the more chances you have of landing that hunting spot.
I had a young man come by my place many years ago who had just moved to my part of the state and was looking for a spot for him and his daughter. He was clean-cut, gave a firm handshake, told me about himself and where he was from... I wanted to help him out, but I already had my land leased to a cattle rancher. First impressions and appearances do matter. I did keep his name and phone number handy just in case I found a lead. Maybe I'll run into him again someday and he'll have a great spot and some stories to tell.
