I am wondering if any of you know of any big ice storms prior to the one in January 2007. I tried to search on the internet but couldn't locate it.

Yeap, there have been others. Found the following in quick google search:
CNN.com - Weather - Ice storm coats parts of Southern U.S. - December 13, 2000
STLtoday - St. Louis Post-Dispatch Archives
http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/...ckval=GooglePM
as can see, some of these a cost is involved in acquiring the full story...

You might also check local library for microfiche and other archives too.

Thanks for the quick response. I live in KC but have in-laws in Springfield and wondered how often an ice storm may occur in their area.

Funny! Yes, (suprisingly) I'm concerned for my parent-in-laws. Now for the rest of that clan, hmm.. that's another story -j/k. The rest of them are in Chicago, where I'm originally from. My parents are there too, so I want Chicago to be ok for all of them.

There have been other ice storms in Springfield and Branson area before 07. The 07 was the worse ever. The ice storms don't usually last as long as 07. The amount of ice was very unusual, the unusual events were all over the nation and the world for that matter. They usually hang around a few days or maybe a week (on occasion). Weather is unpredicable everywhere these days. Springfield usually keeps a pretty good handle on the streets when weather is bad. 07 was just a crazy weather year everywhere.

Its good you have concern for your families, that is what family is about and most Ozarkians feel the same way you do.

Just so everyone knows, the 2007 ice storm was nothing like anything we've had before. I've lived here all of my life. The only other time I remember being out of power for more than a few hours due to ice was in 1987. It was not even close to being like the storm of 2007. That was the worst thing anyone around here has ever lived through... my grandmother included.
