I guess that's my bad...not worrying. All the years in No Ca (tripping over the San Andreas) I rarely worried about earthquakes, unless a bad one hit and then I'd stock up on canned soup & bottled water for a while.

And here my 14 years in MO I haven't owned a single house with a basement. I guess, snake, if it hits close to home I'd start to worry, eh? I have become very respectful of lightning. I've talked to too many people who have been hit...some more than once!!!!!!
I think it's advisable to read all the warnings and take precautions appropriate to where you live.

I have to say, tho...the year I spent in Western Kansas I was scared to death the whole tornado season.

LJ, I think there's a fine line between worrying and being cautious/safe. I wouldn't want to be on pins and needles every time I heard about a storm coming in, and thankfully I'm not. I have an enormous amount of respect for the power of a tornado, but I don't fear them.

I think that you were exactly right when you said that most people hear more hype than fact about tornadoes. I wouldn't want someone considering a move to Missouri to think that we get houses knocked over every other weekend or anything, because it rarely happens. But, it does happen, so people need to know the warning signs and have a plan in place.

Ive survived 3 tornados in my 23 years on the planet, the best thing to do is stay away from small or sharp objects find the best supported room, think I-beams dry wall make sure its less likely to collapse pillows, blankets, stuff like that find a corner and bury yourself with them and find something sturdy thats attached to the house to wrap your arms around and hold on tight and pray, I hope i could help thats just what ive learned in my experience with tornados and im still alive.

With a Brick house, and concrete front porch which has an old "Empty Coal Bin" Below it. How Safe do you think that might be, as apposed to an interior room in the basement with tornadoes in the area?
