I heard that you have to be careful waterskiing near the dam, because the giant catfish will come to the surface and grab your skiis!
The City of Carthage has had a story for many years of an underground cave with a lake large enough to boat on. Somewhere in the archives is a newspaper article from the 1870s in which several men claimed to have discovered the mouth of the cave on a piece of land and descended down to the lake. They even drew a picture of the cavern and lake. However, the legend goes, the owner of the land became worried that others would attempt to go down and get hurt or vandalize it so he dumped several truckloads of cement into the opening and noone is exactly sure where it was. Another story says there is a hidden door in the basement of the Jasper County Courthouse which leads to the cave.A few years ago some geologists were hired to extensively research the area and attempt to locate the cave. They used high-tech sounding devices like is used to locate oil and discovered that there IS a large anomaly which could be a cave, but it appeared to be filled with mud. Carthage has several caves in the area and has been mined for limestone and marble and occasionally a sinkhole opens up, but so far no wonderful new tourism cave! ![]() |

Stone County , MO. was home of the "Yocum Dollar", a silver coin almost exactly like the American Dollar, but with .4 g more silver! Named after one of Stone counties founding fathers, It was used in the early 1800's as LEGAL tender, and is responsible for our local Theme Parks' name...Silver Dollar City!
![]() This story, and more.... The History of Stone County, Missouri This is fun! Haven't found any "Bigfoot" type stories, but there are MANY ghostie kinda stories!! I'll keep diggin'!! ![]() |
