One thing to point out to others who might go to Mr. Yen's for lunch on a Sunday. They do not have the specials on Sunday but I don't know about Saturday. I can't remember what our total was, NOLA2SGF, but I will say that the ambience was great and the server was very friendly. That is not always the case in Chinese restaurants and it makes all the difference in the experience. Don't you agree?

Just to make it clear, the $6.95 combination plate is not actually a special in the sense of anything temporary. It's their regular, everyday price for most combination plates on the lunch menu. As I recall some were $7.95, but the ones we ordered were $6.95.
Like in so many restaurants these days, the lunch menu is apparently available at lunchtime on weekdays only. We didn't eat there on the weekend, but Mrs. G did.
(Incidently - - I was surprised that Mr. Yen's was not crowded at all at lunchtime on a weekday. You'd think people from the Medical Mile would zip down National and eat lunch there, but I guess not.)
I had a similar experience today. We had to eat off the dinner menu at lunch, at a restaurant here in New Orleans (Copelands), because it is Sunday. Pretty aggravating, I agree! I even asked in my sweetest little old lady way, and they refused to let us order off the lunch menu. We ended up with way too much food and I ended up with a headache. Since the dinner portions are far too big, and since they refused to accomodate my request, next time I think we might split one.

We are back in New Orleans, but this will give us some ideas beyond Mr. Yen's the next time we are in town.

Glad that I could help. Canton Inn will definitely be different than Mr. Yen's. At Canton, you walk up to the counter and place your order. They give you your drinks and a number to set on your table. When your food is ready, they'll bring it out and set it down on the table. That's the extent of the "service" that you'll get. Of course, at $3-4 a plate one doesn't expect much more than food. And it's good, in my opinion.
Lucy's is the same way as Canton, but in a bit nicer place (and a bit higher price). I like them both for a quick and easy meal.

I finally tried Pizza House at 312 Commercial St. in Spf tonight. Me, Hubby, and the 3 young 'uns. We ordered 1 large pepperoni pizza, 1 large deluxe pizza and 5 sodas. The crust was very, very thin and crunchy (yum). The toppings were good as well. I was kind of hoping their sausage would be a good Italian sausage, but it was just pork sausage--good, but nothing great. The service was excellent and we all really enjoyed the ambience...very family friendly and laid back. We'll definitely go again, but agreed we won't order take out as their ambience is 1/2 the fun.

What a great post, MOMommyx3! We'll have to get by there sometime. I think Commercial is up on the North end of town so I'm not familiar with it. Do you remember what the cross street(s) are? By the way, I haven't seen you around here before. Welcome to the forum!
We went to Macaroni Grill last night and weren't at all impressed. I was the one pushing to go but won't ask to go back again.

MrsG -
Have you tried Arris Pizza? Excellent food with a definite Greek influence. I'm not a huge fan of sausage pizza, but their Greek sausage is very, very good.

I am so surprised that you didn't like Macaroni Grill, Mrs. G! We really liked it, but then we haven't yet tried as many of the other fine local restaurants as some Springfield area residents have. Sorry it didn't work out.
As I mentioned earlier we didn't like Mexican Villa on S. Campbell very much, which surprised me too. I guess we will try the one on National before giving up on it. Can you tell I am looking forward to our next trip back to Springfield? We also need to try Hemingways and so many other restaurants the next time we can get up there on vacation.
Although we like Italian restaurants, we never seem to go to pizza places. I think that when it comes to pizza, Frank and I are like Jack Sprat and his wife. He doesn't like pizza, and I would probably eat too much.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one. I took my mom to the Macaroni Grill for a special luncheon (girls day out) and we were NOT impressed. The food was really below par for what I was expecting and not well prepared. Not to mention that it was pricey for the size of the serving, IMHO.
I have probably already replied to this thread by saying I am not a fan of chain restaurants. So far, Golden Corral and Crackerbarrel are the only two that don't taste like they serve their food out of a Sysco truck. Uncle Joe's Crabshack being absolutely the worst. I swear they buy their food at Sam's.

EAT by Da Barefoot Chef
For those of you hankering for a good gourmet sandwhich or soup..check out theEAT in Ozark (sort of across from Lamberts next to Rebel Gas) in the old smoothie shop.
GREAT food, cooked/prepared to order. The chef cooks things fresh each day and the "menu" (written on white board behind prep area) changes daily. Had THE BEST veggie soup ever and smoked tenderloin. They do their grilling and smokin' right out front. They also make pretty good salads although I have to admit I"m sort of hooked on their sandwiches.
The other great thing is that they use locally grown produce and while not organic per se, they do keep things pretty natural.
Look for the big EAT signs next to the gas station. Only open till 3 on Sat. and closed on Sun. Serving lunch and dinner other days.
