I feel so sorry for the families and the victims of this tragedy. I hope that the Branson duck boat operators are criminally prosecuted. There is no way these boats should have been out on that lake. There were severe thunderstorm warnings issued at least 45 minutes before this happened. Duck boat operations across the whole country are known for their poor safety records. I hope this puts these operators out of business permanently. Nothing can bring back the lives of those who were lost. Terrible tragedy.

Update: 11 dead and 15 unaccounted for.

I did not know that 13 people drowned on a duck boat tour in Hot Springs, AR in 1999. I looked at the tour company's website photos. Their boats look like original duck boats not replicas.

Quote from the NY Daily News article linked below:

"Nearly two decades ago, the National Transportation Safety Board expressed concerns that the boats were prone to flooding and “the vulnerability to sinking” and urged operators to outfit the transports with watertight bulkheads and install flotation materials in the hull.

It’s unclear if the number of passengers played a role in the sinking. Citing a War Department Technical Manual, the National Transportation Safety Board said the U.S. Army-built supply vehicles could hold up to 5,000 pounds of cargo.

“No reference was made to passenger capacity or accommodations,” according to the agency’s safety recommendation in 2000. "

I looked at the recent 1 star and 2 star reviews for this Ride the Ducks attraction on tripadvisor.com, and there were at least a couple of reviews by passengers who felt as thought the boats were overloaded by the operators.

This facebook photo linked below shows the life preservers strapped to the ceiling of the boat. I would be curious to know if they actually got distributed to the passengers.

What a sad tragedy. I personally have never been on one of these duck boats. Last time I went on a touristy boat tour was on the Maid of the Mist at Niagara Falls, NY about 5 years ago. They claimed that their tourist boat company had been operating since the 1800s. I thought it was a great experience.

Were the boats on water before severe thunderstorm warnings were announced?

Death toll now up to 13.

Not sure why they sent the boats out there with severe thunderstorms on the way.
