You know I have noticed a very interesting thing while waiting to get a table at Olive Garden... the greeter tells you that it's a 30 minute wait and give you one of those vibrator thingies. After I got mine, I walked to the restroom and there were dozens of empty tables and servers standing around looking bored. Apparently it's the restaurants feeling that people will want to come to their restaurant if it appears that they are busy, so they make people wait even though there is no need. That's why there is always a line.
Now, I always call for a reservation or call-ahead seating (Outback) so I get seated within minutes of my arrival. No more Olive Garden type waiting for me.
Just my two cents.

Hi, tambre! You asked if I had found a retirement spot, and I really like southeast Springfield, inside the city limits. I haven't bought any property there myself, since I plan to retire, sell my house here, move up there and rent for six months or a year, and then buy. It will be hard to wait that long, since there are many nice homes available in Springfield right now. But, owning two houses in two states is more of a headache than I probably need.
Hi, Mrs. G! I believe it about Springfield having more restaurants per capita than other places! And they sure are jammed on Saturday nights. You couldn't even find a place in the parking lot for many of them. Oh well! Now we know, so we'll just go a little earlier on the weekends next time.

Hi NOLA,
It's nice to hear another friendly voice on the forum. The city of Springfield seems like such a fantastic place, I hope you find everything you are dreaming of there. There is a magazine called 417 magazine that we just subscribed to. It has some interesting articles for people trying to find out about the area. The April edition is about "Top Doctors". It has a survey of 332 physicians voted best by their peers, and has them listed by specialty. Not a bad resource! It also has some great ads for restaurants, real estate, clothing stores, etc. It must be nice to be so close to retirement!
Take Care, Tambre

Tambre, thanks for the info about 417 magazine. I'll have to check it out! Yes, it is wonderful to be so close to retirement. I can hardly wait (so near, and yet so far!). It will be such an adventure for me to move up there.

Those two cents will get you far, Reblue! I suppose that is entirely possible, although I can't imagine that being done all over town. When I was a waitress years ago, I remember that we sometimes had empty tables with people waiting because we had a waiter/waitress or two that didn't show up and we were each only able to handle a certain amount of tables. With servers standing around looking bored, though, that can't be the case on the day that you were there. That's really strange. I would have been tempted to have asked for the manager and politely ask what was the cause of the delay.

Good idea...at least you won't be as hungry if you go earlier...which will help when you still stand in line. Hahaha! It's probably true! We can't believe how full the parking lots are even during the early dinner hours, which is when we like to eat. Crazy, huh?

It's a great magazine and I refer to it often, NOLA! Here's a link to their website: 417 Magazine - Springfield, Branson, Joplin and Southwest Missouri's Guide to Restaurants, Shopping and Events
They do a great job of "Best Of..." type information. There's a big issue each year plus other stuff throughout the year like the top doctors article that Tambre mentioned. Happy reading!

Hi, All,
It's nice to see the responses here. I'm from Portland, OR but will be moving to the Salem, MO area in just six weeks! Yippeee! My wife and I bought some land between Salem and Licking.
As far as work goes, I am willing to do about anything. My FAVORITE thing to do is run Karaoke Shows. I have a monster system with over 40,000 songs of all types. How's the karaoke junkies down there?
Hope to chat with you all soon!

I'm a baby boomer who moved here last year. I can't tell you much about working in the field your in, but I can tell you what there are tons of jobs in the paper in medical fields.
If you look on-line at the local newspaper you can get a feel for employment opportunities (News-Leader.com)
I'm sort of (not hard) looking at part-time stuff down closer to Branson...LOTS of seasonal and part-time work available. I don't plan on competing with anyone who needs full-time employement..been there, done that.

Hi Mrs. C.,
Thanks your nice reply! I got up my nerve to call one of the big hospitals in Springfield, and they are looking to hire people, so at least there is a possibility of a job!
What type of part-time work are you looking for? Tambre
