Default MIssouri State U

I watch a lot of college sports and wondered when they changed Southwest Missouri State to just Missouri State and why did they do that?

I believe that the name changed a couple of years ago (time flies, so I'm not certain of the exact date). Missouri State and Mizzou have been the two largest universities in Missouri for a while. MSU (or SMSU) had pushed for the "Missouri State" designation for quite some time, while Mizzou fought against it. I didn't follow the intricacies of the issue enough to say why all of this took place, but I am sure it centered around prestige and money. I know that MSU had to make certain concessions before getting its new designation (no law school, vet school, etc). Hopefully others will chime in with more detailed information.

You're actually right on 8 Snake. It was all about prestige. Southwest Missouri State sounds like a regional school, and they felt they could appeal to a broader audience from a recruiting standpoint if they could change their name to Missouri State.

MU was against for exactly the same reason. They felt it might pull away from their recruiting base.

Prestige and money. Msu lobbied the Missouri legislature for a long time to get the name change. Some special interest politician from the St. Louis area blocked it but when he got the boot from term limits they were able to pass it through. MSU is a good school I graduated from there.
