Hello everyone, i will be moving to a home outside the reeds spring area on state highway Y. I was wondering what there was to do down there... like fishing/hiking/biking/et.... Also what is the school system like? i have an 8 year old and a 6 year old. I also wonder is OTC in springfield the closest community college? I now live in a rough town in illinois and am happy to leave it behind for my country roots again 5 acres of woods sounds good to me

Well, with 54 miles of shoreline, and three lakes to choose from, it shouldn't be too hard for you to find a place to fish! LOL My pick is lake Tanycomo because I prefer cold-water trout to bass.
I cannot address the hiking/biking issue because I don't participate in those kinds of things, but please use caution when biking on roads in the area (Y Hwy included), because the roads are narrow and there are no shoulders. Like everywhere else drivers here go faster than they should and often drive distracted and there have been a few notable pedestrian and bicycle tragedies in not too distant memory.
Welcome to the Reeds Spring area! It's a wondeful, beautiful place to live and I'm sure you will be happy especially if you are an outdoor enthusiast. You might want to hold off until colder weather to do some hiking because of the tick/chigger situation here. It's much nicer to go in January, according to my hiking friends.
thanks 20. yeah was down there recently. i had to do some yard work on the property because it was neglected for about 3 years lol. had a few chigger bites and found a couple ticks. any ideas on what to use to get them out of the yard? yeah im excited. i was raised in the hills of georgia and moved to illinois when i was 12, ive been itching to get back to the outdoors since lol. yeah i noticed that riding bikes on highway y is not in my best interest lol. i have however done some research and found a bikepath that goes past the branson belle right on the coastline . maybe me and you can get together and you can show me a few fishing spots.

Lakes? Yeah there's lots of good lake fishing but don't ignore the spring creeks in the reeds spring area. I've caught some pretty good sized trout out of them. Also north around Crane Missouri there's the crane creek which is rated as one of the best trout fishing streams in the midwest.

Don't quote me but I *think* there is also an awesome bike/walking path from Stonebridge towards Branson. Even though Stonebridge is technically a gated community, they have a restaurant that is open to the public so you drive up to the gate guard and they don't even ask you why you're there, they just hand you a day pass. Anyway, if there is a bike path there I'm sure that it is awesome, Stonebridge does everything top notch.
As for the ticks, I can only say.... "I wish" I had a remedy to get rid of them. Nope. Again, I am told that taking vitamin B-1 daily will discourage ticks (not chiggers, unfortunately). It seems like we have had less tick interest since we began taking it but sadly the chiggers still eat me alive. It wouldn't be so bad if they dang things didn't itch for WEEKS and WEEKS!
Give a shout when you are here and I'll be glad to show you some good spots to fish. Everybody has their little spots! The lake is REALLY HIGH right now so I'm not sure how the fishing is, I haven't heard.
I'll have to check out that bike path. Like I said, I'm not a big biker or hiker, but I do like to take a nice walk along the water when the weather is nice.

Really???? trout in Crane Creek? Well, that would be wonderful since getting to Lake Taneycomo is a major PITA and Crane is like 7 miles from me. woo woo. I'm just going to have to check that one out. Thanks Paw Tucker!

Yeah, 20years. I fished Crane creek on many an occasion. Take my advice though and go downstream from the park because there's some bigger fishin holes down there and the fishing pressure is not as great.
Also up near Hurley there's the Spring Creek. There used to be an old mill sitting there until some lame inbred burned it down years back. Around the old mill site there is a waterfall and lots of trout have been caught there. I remember a teacher at the high school caught a 10 lb rainbow there once. I caught a 5 lb one not far downstream. The old timers will tell you that there's brown trout in those creeks but they are really just dull looking rainbows. Ive never seen a brown in the streams although I am sure with many streams connecting to Taneycomo its possible. Good fishing all around though.

There's granules (can't think of the name) that they sell at any yard/hardware store (& Home Depot, etc.) that you can broadcast that works pretty well for me. I do it twice a year and manage to stay relatively chigger-free for the most part. When I am out in the woods, I liberally apply Deep Woods OFF...
