Default Coming soon to a town near you...

Hi all, I thought I'd introduce myself, I found this forum and you all seem a friendly and helpful bunch. Hubby, me, and our youngest daughter age 16 are moving to Springfield...like next week.

He's being transferred by his company. I've been to Springfield a few times, enough to know that it looks like a good place. We've lived in KC for eighteen years. Everyone I've met or talked to on the phone in Springfield has been lovely and friendly and great. I'm really looking forward to the change.

I love the idea of a smaller place, where I can ditch the car and get around on my bike and/or the bus. I love that my husband will be about three miles from his office rather than thirty.

New experiences are good. Despite the fact that I've lived here 18 years, I've never felt really at home here. We came here for a job, so it's poetic that we're leaving due to a job.

So, school starts in less than two weeks. We have to be moved by then. So, there's a lot to do. I don't know why I'm even spending time on the computer, avoiding all the packing and stuff I guess.

Well, anyway, I wanted to stop in and introduce myself and say hi. I hope to get to know you all. Great to "meet" you all.

Luna

Welcome to SW MO. You will love Springfield. I sure do. My husband and I grew up about an hour south of Springfield and now live an hour west (Joplin), although we would rather be right there in Springfield with you!!

Check out some of the great restaurants in downtown, visit Hammon's Field to see the Springfield Cardinals, and my favorite, eat some McCallister's Deli. Best ice tea around. Enjoy your new home!

If you plan on getting around Springfield on a bike, you're a braver soul than me.

Thanks for the welcomes and the well-wishes, everyone! We're on target to be all packed up and outta here on Monday. Whew! What a roller coaster it's all been, but it's going great guns.

Silvermouse, I DO plan on getting around on my bike...please elaborate your concerns. I of course don't plan on riding around on main thoroughfares with all the cars, but the street layouts are such that that's not even necessary, side streets are less heavily traveled by cars and safer for both pedestrians and bikes, that's where I plan to travel. And the greenways are of course designed for bikes, hubby and I biked a couple of the greenways while we were there a couple of weeks ago (during that bad heat wave--we were getting up at 5:30 to beat the heat ). I don't see why it wouldn't work, but I do want to hear what your concerns are.

I do hope to come to a coffee get-together, after we get settled in. It meets one month in Branson, the next in Springfield, right? I'll watch the thread for the announcement of the next location, date and time.

It's scary and sad to leave the place we've lived for so long, but we're excited and ready to be Springfieldians...Springfieldites...Springfielders ? Uh...residents of Springfield...

Default Welcome to the area..

Once you get settled in come join us for coffee (see Over The Fence Coffee Club in the thread titles). Moved here about 15 months ago myself. I'm south of Springfield but make it up there at least once a week. Lots of people bike around here, but street biking always has it's hazards. Some of the side streets in Springfield are actually "short cuts" to get around traffic, but I'm sure you'll figure it all out soon enough. The Greenways are excellent.

I was thinking the same thing, but my opinion may not count for much since I don't live there and was only there to visit for a week. But, my observation was just that it didn't seem very bike or pedestrian friendly... I've had the same observation when visiting places back east, so I'm under the impression that the west coast (where i live) is just more bike/pedestrian friendly... When I was in Springfield, I noticed a lot of roads with just enough room for cars - not even any sidewalks, let alone bike lanes...
