As to the TJ's - Brentwood, Des Peres, Chesterfield, and Creve Couer - they all are very nice suburbs of St. Louis - affluent areas. I wish Springfield would get one too. There are 4 within a few miles of each other here in Northern CA - which I hope to escape from soon.

Talking Living in Misery?

I actually became sarcastic and reverted to my childhood, saying, "Hahahaaa! So funny I forgot to laugh!" and "Gee, I haven't heard that one before!"

Then, I figured out a better response. Leaning in close and lowering my voice, I would say, "Missouri is one of America's best kept secrets. It's beautiful and so affordable and we're excited to be moving there!" I'll tell ya, that stopped the negativity pretty well. I think some people actually got that glint in their eye of wishing they had the guts to do the same!
What I say to my CA friends to still (after 13 years!) can't understand why I like living in "Misery"...is to remind them of the story of the frog and the pan of water. It's said that if you toss a frog into a pan of boiling water, he'll jump right out...but if you put him into a pan of cool water, set it on the stove and turn on the fire, he'll sit there and boil to death. Now I haven't actually tried that, but the point is that those folks living in the golden state have had the heat turned up slowly and they've gotten used to the crime rate, the prices and the insanity...so they're just sitting there boiling to death!

I love Missouri. It's a trade-off...of course. If it was perfect, it wouldn't be perfect for long because everyone would come here and we'd have the crime rate, the high prices and the insanity!

I especially love where I live now, in the lakes area down deep in the mountains. The worst of the tornados leave us alone, the winters are a tad milder, and the amenities are pretty amazing for a bunch of little towns!

I will quote Mark Twain: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

Amen, Mr. Twain. (Also a Missourian!)

What a great response, kareybear! There's a saying about the fear of the unknown being more frightening than the trouble we're in. I can't remember the words of it but it sure describes most people, whether from CA or even MO, who stay where they are, even when they're unhappy, because they fear the unknown more.

Like you said, though, if the secret got out, everyone would come here and ruin it. So, I guess the fear of tornadoes and the humidity have the tendency to weed out the majority. I guess the unfriendliness of "the natives" weed out the rest, huh?

It is beautiful down where you live and like you, we love living the Ozarks! That Mark Twain quote is a perfect fit for this situation, too! Oh...and "AMEN!"

Good stuff! Thanks for sharing them!

Talking Moving to Missouri from CA.

I, too have moved from CA to Mo and have found that the move has a character building character experience. This winter was very harsh but we survived OK. The summers are hot and humid, but the views and the green are absolutely beautiful and there is no sense of violence like in CA. The scenery and clouds are very artistic and like no other you have every seen and you will feel peace here.
We do like it here, there is a culture shock with the people, they are different in the the way they shop, think, and vote. Be prepared for a Southern view on things. But if the people like you, they will lay down their life for you. So when you arrive, just continue to love on the people and they will love on you. Kids are the same all over and most people go the church out here and that is where you will experience the community. Visit one when you arrive.
We lived in Ozark and loved it, sold our home to downsize and now live in Springfield. Buy property if you can as it will be beneficial to you and we wish you the best on your move, you may have moved already as you email is from April of this year. If you need a friend, send a personal to me. Momma Duck

Default Thanks Mommaduck

We are getting ready to move, packing up as we speak. The moving truck comes next Friday and we will leave a few days later. We rented a house in Ozark and will try it out for a year and see how we like it then either buy land and build or buy a house if we find what we want. Did you like Ozark and why did you move from there to Springfield and not stay in Ozark and downsize there? Just curious.
