Default looking for a small town within an hour or so of Laurie, MO

Just found this forum and read a few threads (love the frankness of the responses) ..... my husband and I are looking to relocate to mo in the next few monthes and would love to have your opinion on what town would be good to look into. He was raise Sedalia and on a resort on Lake of the Ozarks and has always wanted to "come home". i on the other hand am from cali....well the sierra nevadas in norcal. the last place had about 100 ppl in it (believe it or not). we are looking to buy.. his taste is a condo on the lake and mine is an acre +/-, huge 5+ bdrm old old huge home with character and charm, fixer is just fine with me (i won that argument hehe). cuz i will need something to do while he is gone. he works on the road, so i will be alone mostly. I have looked at Buffalo, Sedalia, Eldon, Laurie (of course, this is where the family lives), Knob Noster, Cole Camp, Hollister and everywhere else; not real excited about lebonon. I guess what i'm saying is .... where would be a good, safe place for me to plant my feet and dig in???? Thanks in advance!!

There are some beautiful old homes that really need restoring everywhere you go around here, so that shouldn't be too hard to find. If you want to live near the family then pick a place near that area. Eldon wouldn't be too bad. There are some nice pieces of property in the Lebanon area, but not too welcoming.
I don't know about you, but I sure do miss the Sierras. Good luck to you!

From the choices you mentioned so far, the Eldon area would be my first choice. Population is around 5k, just about right for small town living with some convenient amenities. I guess it depends on if you get your way or he gets his. Not many condos that are going to be fixer uppers and have acreage too boot. For the country laid back simple approach, I still like Eldon. Good luck with your relocation.

No offense at all! I'm from nor cal and have family scattered all over the north including the Sierras. I sure do miss it too! As far as MO is concerned, it definitely is an adjustment. It took me a while but that's because of the town we're in I think. They're not too keen on newbies here. I hear it's different in other towns. I like the 4 seasons, but not enough snow for my taste. Never saw freezing rain until I moved here and don't want any more of that!
I'm sure you'll find something that suits you!

You don't have to live in town, but you can still be close enough for the amenities.

maagy ... I just joined this forum and saw your post, I know it's been a couple months so I was wondering if you already decided on an area? We moved to Camdenton from CA 3 years and love it.

Have you looked into Stover or Versailles? I personally like the Cole Camp Area. It is convenient to both Sedalia and The Lake of the Ozarks. Both place have ample of shopping area. I lived in Stover for a short while, I didn't really care for it too much, too many Turkey/Chicken Farms. I think the same goes for Versailles. I do not mean to offend anyone in those towns, just not my cup of tea.
Have you considered Laurie? It is a very nice area.
We plan to move back to Missouri too (living in my home state of Ohio now), but closer to Springfield/Joplin area. I really miss Missouri residents. They are great! Nice people, and a slower paced community. Miss that!
Good Luck with your move and I am sure you will enjoy The Show me State!

Cole Camp is cute. We used to go through there sometimes on the way to the State Fair. It has a bustling "Mayberry" feel to it.
