This cave sounds really fascinating, but as Riceand mentioned, please remember to get the owners permission before seeking it out. Can you imagine the liability issues of having something like this on your property? Yow!!

Silvermouse,
You are absolutly correct about liability, given the litigious nature of our society. I understand why the property owners might not want people to go exploring. I am willing to sign whatever waiver they may need to be able to visit this cave again.
Ciaerin,
I messaged you with the location. I would prefer not to post the exact location in this public forum.

I tried to contact onwers several times to no avail. I had heard many years ago that this was an unstable cave. I am not very knowledgable about caves but what makes this one unstable I wonder? I spent many hours pretty deep in this one and never heard any collapses but like I said I am no expert.
On a side note my wife watched some movie the other day called "The Descent" and now will never step foot into a cave.

I would imagine the same thing that makes a cave unstable is what created it in the first place-water erosion. Bits of soil filtering away from rocks, freezing and thawing plus roots pushing things around would loosen rocks over time. If it is a wet cave that occasionally fills with water the erosion would be even faster. Some caves are very susceptible to flash-flooding. Add in the human factor of drilling or dynamiting in the area, possibly train vibrations, who knows what might come down?
That said, a lot of caves are more stable than our homes-if they are surrounded by thick layers of limestone, holes in the ground may last millenia.

Found Post Regarding Cave
I found this post at: Missouri State Archives Presentation: Scoundrels to the Hoosegow and Other Writings of Morley Swingle
It is part of a presentation on caves, their history and legend. This is all it says about it. But at least you know your not crazy it really does exist. LOL
Treasure Hunters
Treasure hunters can take heart. We used to have a cave called Old Spanish Cave in the Reed Springs area. There’s a treasure legend around this cave and supposedly it was found during a search for buried treasure.
When you go inside you can kind of get an idea of why those geologically untrained treasure hunters thought they had found an old Spanish mine. The cave is formed along joints. And there are some really interesting walls in there that look artificial but they are natural.
This gentleman about the year 1900 was living in a cave.[/color]

Have you checked out the Gentry Cave in Galena (off of Blunk Road). It has quite a history too. (And it's a lot easier to get to).
