Sparse.
Ok, seriously, Sparta is a small town to the east of highway 65. The town itself is little more than a wide spot in the road. However, there are a lot of new developments going up around there - land is cheaper than closer in.
The people are, as far as I can tell, good Missouri folk.
The police are *ahem* active. Especially if you are in a hurry and exceed the posted speed limit.
Sparta High school is excellent. I sold a home for their principal recently, and learned a great deal about their program.
All and all, Sparta is a great area - and close to Springfield. Probably 20 minutes, assuming you don't have to stop to get a ticket.

I never say anything bad about an area, but I was not impressed with Sparta from a purely residential angle at all. It's hicker than hickory, rough, rural, and a lot of the homes are makeshift with a nicer one stuck here and there.
In a bad winter, I'd think without a 4-WD you'd never be able to get out of the area.
I went through it once and immediately wrote it off my places of possibilities.

Go look at the property anyway. Who knows. It may be paradise. You have to see it for yourself to come to a conclusion.

The main part of the town is old-very old. Since the downtown is not a hotbed of development, the homes are older. However, there are new developments in the area - one subdivision that I can think of, with 3 acre lots and about $170k homes being built. There is also a subdivision in town with no home older than 10 years.
Highway 14 runs through the middle of town and Highway 125 runs from Sparta into Springfield. Neither are rated as 4WD only roads.
The Sparta High School MAP scores are in line with state averages, and the small class size is appealing to many.
Not the most metropolitan community to be sure, but hardly "hicker than hickory"

Sparta is great. I have lived there my entire life. Yes it is small, but it is growing. In no way is it a hick town. It's not like other small towns where you know everyone's business. Everyone is friendly and minds their own business for the most part. Many houses are under construction and even some new businesses such as a new Subway. The city already offers many types of businesses, especially for the size that Sparta is. The city's Industrial Park is developing with a few new businesses looking to move in there soon. The City and School are currently in the process of planning/developing a city park which will be nice. The school is pretty good and for the past two years received the honor of Accredited with Distinction in Performance which is the higest honor a school in Missouri can get. The high school offers many clubs and sports/activities for the students to participate in. The school is also in the process of planning a major expansion of the high school and renovating the other facilities within the next two years. Sparta is a great community that is forever changing for the better. I would reccomend it to anyone

Sparta is as Randy stated. I live outside of Sparta proper - on the Ozark/Sparta "border" - It is rural, but both Sparta and Ozark are growing fast - I am originally from KC MO - If you want some of the rural life, large lots, rural suburbia you will love it here - there is always springfield for more to do
