A buddy and I will be visiting Springfield in May. As it stands we'll have only a couple of days to look around and get a feel for the area. It's more of a scouting expedition. I would like to see the landscape, meet some people and see what Springfield has to offer. We might even like to attend service at one of the churches so any advice there would be appreciated.

I don't know any of the churches there (there are lots), but I always recommend going to the Bass Pro shop there, on the corner of W. Sunshine and S. Campbell. It is many times larger than any other I have seen.

I enjoy going there every time we visit Springfield, even though I don't fish or hunt.

What are you "scouting" for? That might help narrow down your plans. I lived in Springfield for over 20 years, and grew up not too far from there.
Bass Pro is a neat place, I remember when it was first built. We just visited last April for the first time in several years, and it was on my short list of places to visit! Bought tons of stuff to take home with me (Hawaii).
There are many lakes nearby, lots of hunting and fishing opportunities, the zoo is very nice for a small one.
Churches, yes there are many. We attended St. Agnes Cathedral so of course I'm pretty partial to that one!
There are 2 major colleges; MSU a state university, and Drury, a very good private college. Several religious based colleges too.

Springfield is home to the Assemblies of God church, Baptist college, most christian denominations, catholic church and a jewish temple. It is hard not to find a place to worship that you like in Springfield. There are some nice golf courses, a country club, tons of shopping on Glenstoe and Sunshine, a huge country western store, nice grocery stores, Walmart and most of the box stores. There is even a horse jumper club, and shutzhund nearby. Sprinfield is 25 miles from Branson and maybe 75 from Eureka Springs, Ak. I may be the only person in the world who likes Rockaway. I love to go in the fall when the ducks and geese stop. Sprigfield is part of the Canadian - Mexico flyway. Sprinfield airport is pretty nice, too and the main libary is awesome.

If you can't find it in Springfield, you haven't looked hard enough. I should add the nearest Trader Joe's and Costco are in St. Louis. Bummer.

I had been so upset with the idiots who developed the Taneycomo waterfront into "The Landing" (wretch), that it never occurred to me that the geese and ducks that used to be at the city park there (before they DESTROYED it), would just fly a little farther down stream to Rockaway.

I shall have to pay a visit there to feed my little feathered friends! I love it.

Take a drive around Springfield, making sure to hit Bass Pro. You can do a tour of Springfield in less than a day really. Take a drive west and east, and down to Branson. You will definitely see all the different aspects of the area. Springfield is the big city of the area.

Isn't it funny how we each have our own perspective?

While I was sad to see the history of the Sammy Lane & Dimitri's and other Branson waterfront relics go away, I absolutely love the Branson Landing and think geese are nasty, vile creatures that are better off on my dining room table.

Love ya, 20yrs...

Bass Pro, yes.

Know that the city is divided into 4 distinct quadrants, the "better" being the South East. Almost all of the good shopping & dining is there.

I also think you need to hit Andy's Frozen Custard!Andy's Frozen Custard – Legendary Treats

And the downtown area is pretty cool. It's All Downtown - Springfield MO

Like sports? Check out Hammons Field. The Jewel of Jordan Valley Park: HAMMONS FIELD

Heading south...do check out the Landing...http://www.bransonlanding.com/ ......the old part of Branson...Downtown Branson Missouri... and drive over to the Dam to see Table Rock Lake. Table Rock Lake - Our Lake is Your Lake - Table Rock Lake Missouri
Have lunch at Big Cedar Lodge. Big Cedar
