You are correct, it appears I did misread the statistics. Regardless, as a whole Missouri is weathering the recession better than California when it comes to unemployment statistics, although several states are doing much better than Missouri. I wonder if this could be due to the fact that the housing market never really boomed and then subsequently collapsed in Missouri like it did in many areas of California. Also, all of the plains states and Iowa, where the economy is primarily agricultural, are doing much better than the country as a whole. I find that somewhat interesting as California has a nearly year-around growing season, especially in the Imperial Valley, while the plains states are desolate for several months out of the year.

Howell County has started seeing the effects of the recession
in recent months as well. Caterpillar has laid off all of their temporary
help as well as many permanent workers too, and it is rumored to
be shutting down. Other factories (Armstrong for one) are laying
off as well.

The economy is in the crapper everywhere I guess.

There have been some manufacturing layoffs too in Newton County. La-Z-Boy (makes the chairs) laid off a lot late last year and more are expected. They are also on a "pay scale ramp down" meaning all employees make less each month until June. You have to accept it or have no job.
Lot of other cuts around the Neosho/Joplin area too.
