Economically, Lincoln is the better choice. If you prefer a more conservative town, Springfield is your choice. Springfield also has more recreation (Lake of Ozarks, Hiking, etc.)
I think I would live in Springfield if it was for nothing else other than being near a large lake I can boat on.

Thank you so much, everyone, for your fantastic replies. I really appreciate the time and effort you've spent to give me some insight into Springfield and Lincoln. This information has helped a lot towards making a decision about which to choose.

Having just come back from a vacation in Springfield, and wanting to move there permanently because of our good experience there, I'd recommend Springfield. An added benefit: It's in such a beautiful part of the country!

I recently moved from Lincoln, NE to Springfield. I was born and raised in NE.
Good things about Lincoln is the unemployment rate is fairly low. They have plenty of medical jobs and of course the University. The downtown area is very well kept...but you also don't want to live down in the heart of the city. That is a higher crime rate area. Traffic is better in Lincoln than it is in Springfield except...during football Saturdays. The bike trails are decent, Wilderness park is also a very nice park. They have pools and a splashground they just opened at the end of last summer. Omaha is only an hour away. Grand Island is about 100 miles and they have an AWESOME waterpark.
Springfield is a nice city with lots to see and do, the cost of living is definately cheaper but so are the wages. The traffic in Springfield is horrid and I have been plenty of places. I do have to say Missourians can't drive to save their lives. The weather is decent. Humid in the summer and short lived winters.
Both cities have nice people and shady people. Good luck with your decision.

If you're out looking for a small town that has big city amentiites, you should also consider Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Of course, you do have to deal with four extreme seasons, but it is America's largest small town. The economy has not been hit nearly as hard in Sioux Falls because of it's diverse infrastructure. Medical facitilites near the top 5% in the country for healthcare. Sioux Falls citizens are friendly with a tough work ethic. There are several schools in Sioux Falls for extended education and there in no state income tax in South Dakota. Property tax varies throughout the state, but is roughly 2%. Sales tax is at a very low 6% as well.
I recently moved to the Branson/Springfield area. I am enjoying the heat and humidity from inside my air conditioned house.....thank goodness!!! Just thought I would throw another city at you for you to consider. :P
