good chicken fried steak in Springfield?
Hi,
I'm traveling to Springfield for a few days in August. Does anyone know where I can get a good home-style chicken fried steak in Springfield?
Here in Las Vegas, everything is frozen and deep fried.

I hate to say this, but my experience with chicken-fried steak in the Ozarks has been mediocre. Just about every restaurant uses the pre-breaded, boxed and frozen variety. Just another example of the way the Ozarks is becoming homogenized.
BUT! If you travel down I-44 on a Thursday, stop at the Doolittle exit and eat at Cookin' From Scratch. On Thursdays only, they take round steak, bread it on the premises and cook it the right way. It's delicious. Not as big as the perfect chicken-fried steak available in Texas, but good nevertheless.

I like Smith's...the closest one to Springfield is in Bolivar, right off of Hwy. 13.

That's too bad. But then, I've learned to accept change. I was really bummed when the Black Kettle closed down (now THAT really dates me )

Well, I checked out Lambert's menu online and it definitely looks interesting. I'm pretty sure I'll take a shot at it.

Rosie Jo's in Ozark
Well, this is a recommendation for chicken fried chicken steak. Rather than the pounded round steak thing, it's a pounded breast...thin, deep fried, with very tasty white gravey. Of course, personally I think Rosie Jo's has some of the best regular fried chicken around.
Your going to find that somethings come from frozen no matter where you go...it's an economic thing for most restaurants (and for most home cooks). Keeping fresh items doesn't make sense for most restaurants. But it's how they prepare it that matters.
Where you from in Las Vegas. Used to live near Floyd Lamb state park myself...off of Brent and Homestead.
