When I was a girl, my parents bought the Brown estate (Buster Brown Shoe) just outside Greenville, Mo., to summer there.
My mama would send us all out in the morning, each with a sharpened hoe, to kill the copperheads that would be curled up on the asphalt tennis court, sucking up the heat from the day before.
Big shock for a little girl from Ladue! Thank goodness my mama was a farm girl from Fisk, we killed a mess of snakes every summer with those hoes, and I carry one with me to this day when out on my property down here, it comes in handy!

Got an Uncle and a bunch of Cousins in Fisk.....
Why, I remember going to see my uncle and he has this farm pond ya see. I say Uncle Marvin let's go fishin in your pond, He says allright boy and reaches down and grabs a cottonmouth snake, Now my uncle stars that snake right in the eye until the snake was scarred stiff, he hands him to me and says here;s your pole boy. I says we need some line, so reached down and grabs a brown recluse spider and squeezes the silk line right out of her... I says we still need some bait, So he grabs a skeeter right out the air, now this skeeter I thought was a hummingbird at first, but nope it was a skeeter... So says cast right in over by that log, So I casts in, and get me a bite. next thing ya know I'm barefoot skiing behind the biggest dern gar fish ya ever seen.. Uncle yells don't fall Boy, them fish got teeth,,, So anyway I went home and bought a boat cause shore fishin in Missouri is mighty scary.....

Every time I try to give some reputation points, it ways I need to spread it it around. It has told me this on about half a dozen posts from different people. Technology is too smart for this dumb old country boy.

Bah! Thems don't scare me none. We got us what we call Greenheads. They may not be as big as Horse Flies, but they have a mighty bite! They also make a satisfying <CRUNCH> when you kill'em.
And it's my understanding that our Strawberry Flies are similar to your Deer Flies. They are out during the same weeks that strawberries are ripe. Boy! Can them suckers swarm! It's possible to kill a dozen with one swat to your head when they are out in full force.
Do y'all got gnats, too? They may not look like much, but they can drive you right back in the house when they are present in cloud-form. Worse, they offer little satisfaction in the killin' of 'em - no matter how many you get at once.

I grew up in Missouri and spent a lot of time out doors and in the country, fishing, hunting, all the usual stuff. I saw a few snakes but by far the majority of them were harmless and beneficial. I've seen, and killed, more copperheads in Texas than I ever saw in Missouri. I wouldn't think twice about snakes as a reason not to move to Missouri.

I grew up in the Springfield area and have to say that I saw more snakes in MO than I've seen in all the other states I've lived in, combined. For the record, I have lived in TX, OK, TN, AL, CO, AZ, MS, and a few other states as well, and none of them compare to Missouri as far as snakes, IMO. Lots and lots of copperheads south and east of Springfield. Used to go to Boy Scout summer camp up around Marshfield, and that place was copperhead central. We could watch them crawling underneath the floors of our tents and would kill as many as we saw. Have seen cottonmouths swimming in the Sac River. I just about lost a stringer of fish to one of them on Fellows Lake; pulled that sucker up on the bank and dispatched him pronto. There are lots of good snakes in MO, for sure, but the venomous ones are there in force.

I've been here 15 months now and it seems I see snakes often. The cats bring up one a couple of times a week but I haven't seen any copperheads since clearing the property. It seems every time I go fishing, I see at least one. As long as I see them first, I'm good.

Cats...
Cats. Gotta love 'em.
Maybe that's why I haven't seen many snakes in Missouri, my kitty was afraid of the out-of-doors. She'd act all big & bad from inside the picture window when birds were flitting around on the deck...but open the door & she'd run for the bedroom.
I think it's interesting that some of us have seen lots of snakes and some of us have seen very few. I've lived in town and out in the country and at the lake. Just haven't seen that many...
