The Pavillian and The Cellar? Oh...And the riot?
I went to "Rockaway" last summer to a Biker Rally ( No I am not a Biker)and it sure brought back a lot of memories. The little village haden't physically changed much in all those years. I was just wondering if anyone here remembers going to Rockaway Beach, back when it was booming.

Okie

Oh, yeah, I remember when all the little resorts were full, the beaches were booming, and there was a lot happening. Back then, Rockaway Beach was sometimes more happening and exciting than Branson - the boom had yet to begin.

Our family spent about a week a few years ago in Rockaway and it was so quiet, not that that's a bad thing at all.

Back in the 1920's, Rockaway Beach was a big party town and people took the train to Branson then got on steamboats that ferried them up the lake. Even Al Capone is rumored to have spent a little down time at Rockaway Beach.

I remember it in the late 40s or early 50s. My family took their first and last vacation before other things happened. I was about 10 or 11. I remember it as if it was yesterday. It was fabulous then. I'd like to have a postcard of the main drag. Is that possible?

Cool pics! Are any of the old hotels still there? My mom reminded me we stayed at a place on the beach when I was a kid in the late '60's and we walked up the hill to the ruins of an old hotel. I had totally forgotten. Be fun to check it out again.

I was eleven years old when our family first visited Rockaway Beach in 1951. It was a sleepy town back then. I remember that as a pre-teen there was not much to do there on vacation. Just a miniature golf course that I remember, where my younger sister and I were regulars. And, of course, the lake, where my dad spent lots of time fishing - many times without success. I'm sure it's all changed there quite a bit. Even a pizza place, I understand.
